Help re: Print Quality with Brother HL 2170W
A year or two ago I bought a Brother Wireless HL-2170W printer from Staples.com. I believe it was refurbished but after all promotions I paid about $50 out of pocket for it and it came in the factor box and looked like it was brand new.
I has been a great printer and I save more then I paid for it each year by using the inexpensive 3rd party toners I get for $10-$15 a piece from mwave.
I first started having problems with the printer when the toner light would go on after only a ream or two of paper had been used (500-1000 prints). It was my understanding that with one toner unit I should get 2,000 plus normal prints however because I wasn't using brother toner cartridges and because I was paying so little I didn't mind switching them more frequently then what I thought I should be (FYI - I had to replace them or the printer wouldn't print---> I used every trick including putting electrical tape over the sensors that read the toner levels).
Eventually I googled this problem and learned off the "reset" trick where you turn the printer off using the off switch. Open the lid and while turning it on (and the lid open) you hold the action buttton. You then press the action button twice... wait a second... and press it 5 more times. This is supposed to reset the print counter.
So that allowed to me extend the life of my toner cartridges but I noticed the print quality started to get bad, even when it seemed like their was plenty of toner (FYI, I have never used a toner long enough to where the print quality started to go bad because of what looked like lack of ink---I was always forced to use a new toner due to the light coming on).
Now I've got streaks on one side of a print out where it is light and on the other side it is heavy.
I have taken the toner out and lightly swayed it side to side to hopefully balance the ink. I have taken that green thing (corona wire maybe?) and moved it side to side dozens of time. I have taken "monitor wipes" and tried to clean out the inside of the printer but I'm still getting terrible print quality.
Is their anything from this point that I can do? Has anyone had experience troubleshooting this printer or a similar brother one?
For the meantime I've had to use my wireless HP AIO printer and that thing is a ink monster and too expensive to use long term.
