I went to Home Depot with a self servicing exchange for AmeriGas tanks, and it gave me an empty tank. Luckily, Home Depot sided with me, and gave me a new (full) one. They said this happens a lot with AmeriGas. It probably would have fired up the grill for 10 min, and wonder if they are scamming people with low-filled tanks.
Just remember that a 20-pound tank contains about 4.1 gallons of LP, which weighs about 17 pounds. Do not get scammed by them.
This has happened to us us twice.

i am not sure why more people don't just go with propane refill... overall its more cost effective than a tank replacement. I only do tank replacements when I want a newer tank..

Because there is a tank replacement vendor on every corner.
There's a 7-11 on every corner, too, but people on this site don't do their grocery shopping there.

When you fill a 5 gallon tank (20 lb) for $2.99 per gallon you get a full tank for about $12-14. Exchanges are $25-30 and they are not full. That's why Blue Rhino got sued and settled in a class action.

Saving $10-15 per month is worth it. As another poster stated, only do an exchange if you need a newer tank as tanks cost $40-55.

Where do you get refilled? Last time I checked U-Haul...it was like $15 for a refill, vs $20 for exchange. $5 saved isn't worth my time to drive out of my way and wait in line. This coupon closes the gap.

I'm sure there are cheaper places...I just haven't found them. Granted, you'll be sure you're getting a "full" fill and will only get charged for what they put in.

In my area, exchanges are $20. Use this $3 coupon plus the rebate puts me at less than a refill. My closest refill is 10 miles away, while CVS is on the corner by my house and I am able to use a 20% off coupon. In my situation, exchange is easier and cheaper when a coupon is involved.

We got one that was about 2/3 full, but didn't notice till later, since my wife bought it and had an employee put it in the car. I weighed it a few days later. It was definitely from Walmart but since it was a few days later i didn't feel i could return it...

W are you guys getting this $25-$30 exchange rate? At my walmart the cost is $17.82 to exchange. Add this $3 coupon, plus the $3 MIR and you are looking at less than $12 to exchange. which is CHEAPER than the cost to refill. Not to mention the convenience of just picking up a fresh tank without having to wait for someone to fill it up.

Here is a link showing the $17.82 price:

Blue Rhino and Amerigas are different companies. Do some Walmarts carry different vendors?

Bummer for me...app is blocked at work and won't open on mobile. Any other clever way to get the PDF?

Rebate is ONE ONLY. Not worth my time and effort and stamp.

People seem to forget the hidden cost of gas and postage. MIR may be $3 but postage takes up 50 cents and gas another buck. You end up saving $1.50 assuming you get your bate back.

For those using Blue Rhino... they also have a $3 MIR. Expires 12/31/2013.
