deal [lenovo.com]

Once logged in navigate to the Y500 page. Second selection should be for the IdeaPad Y500 Laptop - 59371972. You could choose a different configuration but this one is the best value. Direct link:

Current promotional pricing using IDEADOORBUSTER code is $869. Through the above link it will be $839. This includes the GeForece GT750M and the 16GB SSD drive which acts as a cache (OS is not saved on it).

Yesterday the price for this was $899 without the 16GB SSD. The last deal on this was $799 for the model with the GT650M graphics card. The GT750M is superior.

So i received my laptop yesterday.
I played around in windows 8 with the default config for a couple mins. The slow hard drive was really slowing the experience for me. So 20 mins later i decided to install my SSD and move the 1tb to the caddy i bought on amazon.

The laptop was really hard to open, probably the toughest i have had to deal with. There are nine screws you have to take out on the bottom panel. That is the easy part. Then there are small plastic nubs that grip into the bottom of the laptop. The nubs enter in all directions so its not a easy slide off mechanism. So after struggling for 2 hours i finally got it off without breaking any of them.

After that install was a breeze. 256 SSD installed in the main bay and the 1tb moved to the Ultrabay HDD area.

Also alot of people had trouble with backing up things. I made a backup of the lenovo driver partition. and used their software to make a image just incase.

I installed windows 8 from the iso i downloaded via a torrent. It installed fine and did not ask me for a cd key and my windows is activated.

As for tempreatures mine are in the mid to upper 40C. I only had time to install TF2 and played for about 10 min and the temps were in the 60Cs. So temps are fine on my machine. I do have the Single 750m with 8gb ram without the mSATA.

Oh one more thing someone here had a question about if you do not get the mSATA addon will the slot still be there on the motherboard?. The answer to that is yes, the space and connected are there to add a MSATA even if you didnt buy the 16GB Msata from lenovo.

Thats all for now, hope that helps a few people.
thank you your post is very useful for me since this is exactly what I want to do with my y500 when it comes next week. I was wondering if you could possibly send me the link to the .iso? I've looked on torrent sites and just don't know which version to dload and which one to trust to be virus free.

The HDD caddy
Thanks!

How is the fit with the side of the laptop? Does it look flush and not leave any gaps?

The fit was pretty good i would say 98%. I replaced the front dvd cover that came with the caddy to the stock lenovo dvd drive one. I managed to nick one of the nubs while pushing it in. Since the plastic takes alot of stress when you need to remove it i decided to duct tape the plastic to the metal housing on the caddy to make sure everything stays strong.

Cosmetically it looks pretty decent, it is just slightly lower one one side, but i can live with that. Better than dropping your first born to lenovo for the hd caddy $11 vs $180 something seesh.

here are some pics taken with a phone. =)

Awesome, thanks! Probably just throw my main desktop's 128gb ssd into the laptop, and pick up a 256gb for the desktop.

Doubt it can make the laptop look much worse regardless. Stopped by a Fry's yesterday for something else, but I checked out a Y500 while there. Thought it was a pretty ugly looking laptop, but the display looked great and the hardware is nice for the price. Maybe it's just because it was all beat from being a display unit though.

for all the people providing helpful links on how best to configure this thing or any guides on taking it apart and putting in an SSD etc can you please add the info/links to the wiki on the first page?

I think that would be an awesome tool as this thread continues to grow in size!

You probably got the one I cancelled. I called to cancel Monday, it was supposed to ship today, but got a UPS shipping notice for ship date of the 24th, which never shipped. Still waiting for cancellation to be finalized.

Decided to wait. Don't really need a new laptop right now, and the SLI model was probably overkill for me.
