Very serviceable for a new college student but it is also a bit on the heavy side and bulky. You may want to consider something more in the 13-14" variety that typically are lighter and more portable between classes.

every class i see has 40% mac users in there. tablets laptop.

Actually, that's exactly why I don't recommend bringing them unless it's required. Most students think they're going to take notes, but they just end up Facebooking/Twittering/Redditting.

In fact, some classes now explicitly ban laptops for precisely this reason.
