I still haven't got the idea on why usenet is better than just regular web forum or file transfer using torrent/any other file host service like rapidshare,, etc.

this thread reminded me to cancel cubenet ... if you signed up on this deal (another high winds reseller), prepare to be disappointed

cubenet started out great.. last month it basically became all the things that are broken with astra web...

RIP usenet... you died a quiet an ignominious death (has anyone else noticed how tv shows have gotten BETTER since then).. but in your place Hulu Plus was born.. it's awesome... bc it has like everything dood... even commercials (the way tv was meant to be seen... amirite?)

I have tomato vpn ed. and ddwrt vpn ed. on some of my routers. Would anyone be so kind is to tell me how to setup SlickVPN using the ddwrt or tomato GUI? Can't seem to get it to work on neither. Intent is to route ALL traffic, or all which is possible over the VPN.

I just emailed support, I'll let you know when they get back to me

just pointing out that it's not only the highwinds usenet companies that are being threatened. Pretty much all of usenet is under a threat. By signing up for something other than highwinds, you might get an extra day of whatever you were looking for but it will be taken down. Key is grab whatever you need as soon as it comes out.

If you are looking for cheap and are ok with Highwinds then I'd wait until next months terabyte tuesday from urlhasbeenblocked.

$38 for 1.1 tb block. Can't be beat and the same backend provider as this.

Also note that highwinds isn't bad as a primary provider but not a good backup. This combined with a EU provider for backup blocks is a good solution.

I got a 2.2 TB block a couple of weeks ago during the 2 hour special for $65 at News Group Direct (delete spaces), my main provider for the last ~ 5 years.

Anyone got IPSEC or L2TP to work yet? I could only get PPTP to work.

I think this has been answered if you read the entire thread, but briefly:

Usenet has unparalleled variety of content, and usually unparalleled speed (can max out a 60Mbps connection or even higher). The costs are also lower than the Rapidshare type sites, and as Usenet has been around longer than the Internet, you can be sure that it will be around basically forever. If you paid $50 to MegaUpload... whoops, you not only lost that money, you're likely on some government list now. The Rapidgator type sites are probably organized crime syndicates, and you don't want to f*** with them or give them your CC number; Usenet is more like the geeky kids who want to live a socialist utopian ideal, and you can find the individuals behind the providers and talk to them on forums easily enough.

In comparison to torrents, Usenet is incomparably safer. You are downloading straight from a provider that is likely overseas, and your traffic is encrypted. The only way to be caught would be for a government sting type operation where they physically take over the Usenet server -- and that has never happened, and is unlikely to ever happen. I believe that it is still true that not a single person has been busted for downloading from Usenet -- unless it is something like child porn I don't read about. (Uploading is a different matter.) OTOH, probably hundreds of thousands of people have received DMCA notices for torrenting. With torrents, you're wide-open -- it's the nature of P2P. (VPN or VPS for torrenting is much safer, but your costs go up and convenience and speed go down.)
