need toll free telephone service without monthly fee, for small home biz
I have a Ooma for my landline. I have a separate toll free service that rings the Ooma. On my website site I make my google voice number the most prominent. It is set up to ring the Ooma and my cell at the same time.
My toll free number gets almost no traffic for quite some time now. In the last few months its probably only been called two or three times. I would like to keep it for appearances but I need to find a service that doesn't charge a monthly fee.
For a long time I only paid per incoming minutes used but last year the little 'long distance' company I use got bought by one of the big telephone companies and they started charging $12/mo. That amount just jumped up to $14. I pay $0.17 min but that doesn't really matter.
So, I am looking for a place to park my toll free number that doesn't charge me a per month fee or any other creative “roll your own” inexpensive solution.
Or, I could just abandon the toll free number if you guys think having one is antiquated. Seems to me that it does change the perception of a company even if it doesn't get used.
Costs $38 and includes the device and one year toll free calling to anywhere in North America.
If you buy a 5 year plan, it's even cheaper.
magic jack does not do 800 numbers
You'll get crazy newbies who call 3x a day for 2 weeks straight, and post argumentative paranoia demanding the rebate is guaranteed, in writing, by certified mail, on their doorsteps, by tomorrow evening. Then all the other newbie sheep freak out, and THEY call 3x a day, for 2 weeks straight, and the paranoia explodes. And suddenly everyone's carting their paper back to the retailer demanding a refund.
All those who CALLED to confirm.... Your dad should have silently slept that night.
Rocky you got it backwards he has an 800 number people call, he has a nationwide home business selling cans of dehydrated water.
He wants a cheap company t that offers 800 numbers, so that he appears to be a big business not a guy in his garage labeling empty cans

Komondor, Too funny.
Have you tried Telcan yourself? Googling around I saw a few bad experiences.
To anyone not clear. I'm talking about finding the least expensive service to get inbound calls on my exsisting 1800DehydratedWater number sent to my VOIP service.
You're still not reading the other posts. OP owns a toll free number. MagicJack does not provide a toll free number HOSTING service.
That's what I get for multitasking. Answering posts in the the forums while fixing a computer in Florida, at the same time as talking on the phone.
I'm simply not qualified to do more than 1 thing at a time.
Please excuse me.
I have not tried them but like you said you really don't get many calls 800 number used to be big for 2 reasons
1) they were free
2) the companies used caller id technology (before caller id for the masses) and they could bring up info on you such as where you were calling from as well as demographics, wealthy or poor area, a lot of customers or few and if you were a customer they could bring up your account.
now every call costs the same either free or included in your cell phone minutes and many places pick up better on the local number.
Disney is one company that never got into the 800 number stuff as well as McMaster Carr
so there are 2 side to the story
nice number I like it and the 800 #s really are the best shows you have been around not like the 877 folks
