Cool! People still use watches, let alone mechanical ones. Never knew that winders existed. Used self winders back in the day. But, haven't worn a watch for 12-15 years, with ubiquitous cell phones, computers, etc.

Mixed reviews on Amazon for this, quite a few complained about the durability of this.

Most watch winders have durability issues. I did extensive research and even some of the most recommended winders have issues with failure rates. That's actually the reason it's best to buy a cheap one. Maybe you'll get lucky. If you're using an expensive mechanical, I've read it's bad to wind on a regular basis (can cause early failure of a spring that is a fairly costly repair) so this makes more sense in a lot of ways.

First thing that came to mind is the "five-star" series of mead notebooks

I purchased a Starfive dual winder a couple of years back for ~30 bucks. Winder stopped working about half a year ago. While I am not sure about the reliability of other winders, I can say that this winder has no warranty, so when it breaks (and based on reviews on Amazon, and my own experience, it will) you will have no recourse against the manufacturer or seller.

For the same reasons mentioned above about inevitable failure rates and having bought a more expensive model in the past only to have it fail, I purchased this a year or so ago and it was inexpensive for a two watch winder and actually quite quiet. It's in my bedroom and doesn't bother me at all when winding. Prime eligible also: Diplomat-Double-Metallic-Silver-Winder [amazon.com]

That's a good deal for one, but I still can't justify the purchase. It takes all of 2 minutes to set one in the morning.

Different picture, though a reviewer indicates that it looks just like this one. Consensus: garbage item.

Wolf Designs make very good winders. I spent more on my first winder than most watches I owned at the time.

If you can find one of these for less than $100, that's a pretty slick deal. I recall finding some new old stock items on Ebay a few years back for $75.

Careful purchasing automatic watches... it can become addicting and expensive!

Mine worked fine for a year, then stopped working.
I had to change the battery in my watch.
Winder has been working well again since then.
