PS3 Netflix users: What do you think of the new software update and interface?
I have a PS3 connected via composite cable (480i) to my television. It is a 4:3 24" Sony CRT television. I use Netflix on the PS3 but today Netflix told me that I couldn't login unless I updated to software version 2.13, which I did.
After the update everything looks scrunched in together. It looks like I'm getting the hi-def version or something like it; not the 4:3 version where everything is properly proportioned and the fonts are legible. This has happened before, like a year or two ago maybe.
Whenever I start Netflix a weird thing happens now, it freezes for a few seconds and the logo/background is like off the screen. I attached a picture of it. Then it does load. Everything on the main screen is too small for me now.
Also with this update when I am watching an episode of something Netflix goes to autostart the next episode towards the end of what I was watching. Like today I'm watching an episode of "I (almost) got away with it" and before I could hear this guy's last words Netflix started the next episode. I prefer the way it was before when an episode would run to completion then bring you back to the episode menu and select the next episode, but would not auto-play it. Now when I am watching something towards the end of the episode I have to find the remote and select the little square with what I'm watching to prevent it from autoplaying the next episode.
I called Netflix but they said the screen size thing sounds like a playstation issue. The guy told me to call Sony. I checked my playstation settings and they look the same (the right connection is selected) and everything else is working fine. Also when I persisted he told me I could delete the Netflix app and the PS3 would redownload it. So I did that but no change. Also he said they do not have access to version numbers or information like that. I was asking for some kind of changelog basically.
I figure there's going to be a thriving Netflix users forum on the internet but there are dead and languishing forums from what I can see. How am I supposed to get tech support for this? There's no e-mail or valid forum for them (if you know of one share) and I'm not even sure if they understand the issue on the phone.
The autoplay is a netflix "feature" called Post Play that has been annoying people for months now, and there seems to be no way to shut it off. Consider youself lucky to have avoided it until now. it has been annoying me for many moons. Apparently some customers asked for the feature and netflix has taken that for an excuse to force it on everyone. Why companies can never understand that people hate being forced into things is beyond me. I can't believe leaving the option to opt out of the feature would be that hard to implement, but they have refused to do so thus far.
There may be a way to fix your resolution problem though, just not from the PS3. Log into your netflix account from a computer and click on your account at the top right. Then select Manage Video Quality and choose either of the top 2 choices. As long as you don't select the last option (best quality) you won't get anything streamed in HD
