Setting up OBi202: porting landline number to Google Voice
I bought an OBi202 recently. I had an existing Google Voice number which I have already set up.
Now I also want to port my landline (Verizon) number to Google Voice. I've pulled up the instructions at http://www.obihai.com/porttutorial.html. I bought a tmobile SIM which arrived today. I have two old tmobile cellphones and thought I might be able to use one of those to activate the SIM. However, one of them seems to have a messed up display and for the other one I can't find the charger and the battery is dead.
This leaves me with a third option which is to use my current TMobile prepaid phone. But this has about $50 credit on it. If I replace this SIM temporarily with the new SIM and activate it online at https://www.t-mobile.com/shop/pla...codes.aspx where it asks for the phone IMEI, wouldn't this render my previous SIM with credit useless.
I hope I'm explaining myself properly here. Any guidance would be appreciated.
EDITED TO ADD
Found the charger for one of the old tmobile cellphones. But failed when I tried to register the SIM at https://www.t-mobile.com/shop/pla...codes.aspx The SIM I bought on Amazon came as part of the typical credit-card-sized item. There are three sets of numbers on the card. The 15-digit one at the bottom is obviously the SIM serial number, but I also need the activation code. I tried entering the 12 digit number that appears on the card but get the error message
Oops—this isn’t a valid Activation Code. Please try again.
The Activation Code should be 11 digits long. You can find it on your Activation Card.
I tried omitting the first digit, then the last digit but neither one worked.
You need a SIM card + activation kit. Sounds like you just bought a SIM card. You can't do anything until you have the activation kit. This will be a separate book/pamphlet from the SIM card.
I realize that now. However, I went ahead and called tmobile last night and they activated the SIM for me -- maybe I just got lucky with the CSR that I spoke to. But then I found that the SIM had a zero balance so I can't make or receive any calls. So I'm guessing that I can't use it to do the number porting until I add some credit (min $10 right?).
I naively assumed that all tmobile SIMs came with a few minutes credit.
