The app has an auto-mute function if the noise in the room is below a certain level. Once the volume spikes (baby cries) the volume turns on and alarms on the phone start ringing. I can be out doing yard work or working on my car with the phone in my pocket, and I only hear it when my kiddo is crying.
The app does eat up battery, but that's to be expected. You can choose to have it run in the background, so you can still use your phone, but it has to keeps a constant connection to the camera.
Ive only had one problem, and it was my fault. I wired mine through my attic, and I tapped into a power line that gets a surge every time my A/C turns on (yes, in Phoenix we are not experiencing prolonged snowstorms). The surge would cause my camera to reboot, and it would disconnect from the app. This resulted in us waking up twice in the same night, and realizing our baby had been screaming... resulting in an unhappy wife. I put a uninterruptible power supply on it and I haven't had an issue with it since. I imagine you most likely wont experience the same issue.
Overall, for $82 (camera + app), you have a great video baby monitor.
Got one last Dec. from Amazon for around $63, now it's at$69, not a deal at all !
I too agree that $70 isn't a great deal, but to their credit, foscam set up their own ddns service, and all new models with a unique IP address to access remotely. While there are free ddns services, this new method is really easy to use and might be worth the extra $10-15 to some people.
Are these for interior only? Can I use either one on exterior?
I sort of use one outdoors. It is outside, but inside a bird box. The first one was outdoors for over two years and then I replaced it with a FI8910W that I grabbed from a SD, but then its IR malfunctioned within two weeks. Replaced it again with a FI8918W from another SD (I have three). I then fixed the FI8910W by physically removing the IR cut filter after the "magnet trick" failed to work.
The only way I've been able to get audio on my Mac is via VLC. It's really easy.
1. Download/Install the latest version of VLC [videolan.org]
2. Go to File > Open Network
3. Type the following in the URL text field:
4. You now have vido AND audio on your mac...No Firefox and no Plugin needed!
Thanks for posting that. Very good timing, I still have enough time to see if Mom (who is like a female Dr. Doolittle hehehe) finds the idea interesting, and then get things ordered in time to set things up for Mother's Day
See that blue bar under my name see how it is longer than yours? Mine is bigger, chicks dig it. I have 4 wives and 20 children. My life is superior. The End.
LoL. Really, I am, out loud
I like rep, and I think it serves a useful purpose. A sort of thank you from the community for contributing, as well as a sign of respect. (at least for your slick dealing abilities anyway)
It's not about winning, it's about community. A "place" like SlickDeals really needs a healthy community to survive and be useful, and I think rep helps with that.
Hardcore security nerds will prefer something that sells for $200 but if you would rather put in 3 cameras and get OK picture quality or put in one camera for the same price, that's up to you.
"hard core" in many areas get all caught up in specs, often without really understanding the numbers much less how to apply them. You see it all the time with folks into cars, computers, whatever. Low res camera is fine for the front door, might not provide useful footage for the front yard. It all depends on the use and what you're trying to accomplish. I sure wish the Foscam outdoor cameras had a zoom lens option for example, it'd be useful for a specific project I'm working on this week.
