Thread Details

I have been using the Nokia c3-00 with AT&T for around a year. I was happy with it overall. I somehow messed up the screen and it will not turn on anymore.

Phone features for replacement:
Physical Qwerty ( might settle for touch screen)
Threaded SMS
Music player
[ Thats about it, all I do is talk or txt ]

Phones im considering.
Nokia c3-00 but i don't want to spend the prices for one when its as much as a smartphone upgrade. ( $60+)
Samsung Magnet
Nokia e71x
Any other phones I should think about?

The best non-data plan phone that ATT offers currently is the LG Xpression. All the other ones have horrendous ratings.
Nowadays, in this age of smartphones, your best bet is to just snag an unlocked world phone off of Ebay and use it with your ATT sim card.

I don't care if its an older model. I can always look on ebay and amazon.

The worldwide unlocked smartphones cost way too much though.

Keep in mind if you put your sim card into a smartphone that a data plan will be added to your account. The nokia e71x is classified as a smartphone fyi.

I know. I was going to look for an unlocked version that they would not recognize. I ended up buying a used nokia c3-00.

Not sure if it is different than T-Mobile but T-Mobile doesn't do this to you. All you have to do is go into the phones settings and turn off data.

I didn't know Tmobile allows that.

With AT&T if its a smartphone ( even outdated ) they will make you get or add a data plan on your plan. If its a prepaid phone then you do not have to, according to CSR.

Well if you buy a used smartphone (or unlocked from amazon, ebay, etc..) you don't need to go to the store to activate it. just have to pop your SIM card in so not sure how they could add anything to your plan.

They recognize which phone you have based on your IMEI. If they match it to a smartphone and they realize there is no data plan they add it without telling you. I have read multiple forums where people have had it happen to them and where people went years with no issue. Its a hit or miss but the more popular the phone the quicker they catch on (imo)

One phone on my family plan swapped sim cards and when I check my account, it had it updated to the new phone.

I understand they can recognize the phone but we have never had an issue in our family with swapping phones with people who don't have a data plan and having T-Mobile automatically changing their plan. Doesn't sound very ethical to me for them to do such a thing.

i don't know how Tmobile works. AT&T will do it and apparently its in their contract. If it wasn't an issue I would have settled for the Nokia lumia 920 or Nexus 4, despite my disinterest in a full touch screen phone.

I'd assume you could please ignorance if you switched phones and they added a data plan automatically and get it removed and just go back to your old phone.

Its possible but not worth the hassle when I don't have a real desire for a smart phone. I was pretty happy with the nokia c3-00 and bought a used one. Though this one doesn't have wifi but hardly used the wifi.

No problem. I already bought a replacement phone. At least you learned something about AT&T, right?
