Ordered the A900X's. Been on the look out for some high quality cans. Picked up the Sony MDR XB600 a month or so ago and they are way too bass happy... Hope these are the headphones I've been looking for... If not, I will continue my search!

The A900X is closed, it won't leak sound. Warning to a Grado fanboy, you might be jarred by the presence of soundstage on these headphones. Big Grin
doh! Typo on my end.. I'd probably want the open air ones because i enjoy open cans.

Hey everyone, I usually don't post here on SD but I found a good review for these cans.

http://forum.notebookreview.com/a...eview.html

This review talks about how the AD900x goes up against the HD650, SRH840, and the AD900. I found the review helpful and because of it I am now waiting on the AD900x. I am also really happy with the headphones that I just purchased from here not too long ago, the A900x Big Grin

I'm reading some reports of "bad" batches of these recently where the drivers are mismatched. Debating whether I want to risk it or not. I have the AD700s right now and I absolutely love them.

I've been looking for a great set of headphones the past couple of weeks. I finally narrowed it down to ATH-A900X and ATH-M50. I ultimately went with the ATH-M50. Hopefully I didn't make a mistake :/

Edit: I would just like to mention that I went with the M50's because of the cord length. I was looking for portability as well.

Those are completely different headphones. The AD900's are open headphones and the ATH-M50s are closed, bass monsters. The A900's are the closed version of the AD900s and gives up soundstage for better bass. The bass in the M50's are much stronger than either of the 900s, so if you like your music bass heavy, then you'll enjoy them. The A900's bass is more realistic and the mids and highs are clearer. The A900s also have a decent soundstage. The AD900s have a VERY wide soundstage, but many people find the recessed bass and the wide soundstage better suited for acoustic, classical, jazz, and insturmental music. The A900's are the all around choice for the person who listens to a little bit of everything and likes a well balanced sound with some separation. The M50's are the consumer offering...very good sound, but also very colored to sound good with modern, popular music.

All three are great, but each pair has a completely different audience, IMO.

so the question is are these better for studio monitors?. I have the M50s and are very nice. Not sure if these are aimed for studio use or just enhanced frequencies for listening pleasure not for reference?.

I thought the M50s are monitors that give you a true sound not enhanced?.

nevermind see here for a list of studio monitor headphones [audio-technica.com].

fwiw thats a pretty poor reason to pick a set of cans. most concerned with that will modify the cable entry to accept any stereo TRS or TRRS cable (depending on the use case).

some sellers, like thesoundprofessionals (who have an account on SD) will perform and warranty said modification.

The idea of refurbished headphones is disgusting. We're talking about used headphones that have been on people's heads where sweat and odors accumulate in earpads and everything. Good lord. Not to mention, the refurbished EARPHONES championed in the FAR Newegg deal today are just downright repulsive.

WS99 is sold for $249.99 right now on Amazon, and even if you can get it for the $180 you suggest, that's a full $50 more than these. $50 is not chump change and that is 27% more expensive. Another $50 and you can consider a whole different class of headphones. You shouldn't get in the habit of making such comparisons so lightly.
You realize authorized refurbishers (at least the Sennheiser ones) replace the pads and clean the piece, no? That's why they're refurbished, not used. All my refurb'd Sennheisers have come with new pads.

Audiophile here, and the ATH-900's are amazing headphones for the price -- especially at this price. I own both AD-700's and AD-900's You won't regret them!

I browse head-fi.org quite frequently and have seen several cable mod threads. I'm not tech savvy enough for DIY mods so I went with M50's (nor am I paying someone to do it). I like to travel and take my headphones with me so 3 meters of cable is NOT practical. Also, I like bass so there's another reason why I chose the M50.

Hey sweetlol,

900X vs. M50

I first purchased the 900X and was blown away, but my BFF took them away for a month (she really likes em, so she can keep it) so I purchased the M50s for myself. I gotta say...I'm a little disappointed. This is my experience.

I'm not an audiophile, but I do appreciate music of all sorts. Main music I listen to: EDM, Slow deep baby makin' music, pop.

900X- Very crisp, I really wasn't understanding what people meant by mids / highs before, but I do now. It's like clearing the earwax outta your canals and hearing right for the first time. No joke. It's also like using Digital audio connection vs the 3.5 mm plug. Great stuff. Solid bass. Portability? Hah, I stuff these in a fricken duffel bag they're so damn big. I hate this part. Made in Japan.

M50- When I first got these, wow I was really sad. The mids highs were totally not vibrant, the lows are fantastic though! I'd say it's a small step better than 900X in the lows category. After 10+ hours of use, the mids-highs did come alive a lot more, but not near the 900X. Portability is MUCH better with these headphones. I don't feel like a doofus when I'm using them either. Comes with a pouch. They aren't super portable either, but definitely better than 900X. Made in Taiwan (if that matters to you)

I purchased my M50s from amazon, so the price is comparable to this sale price. If you are going for the M50s, I advise that you never listen to a pair of 900Xs and enjoy you M50s. You will be happiest this way.

OH, and I forgot to add that I'm purchasing these headphones and returning the M50s. The M50s are good though! You will like them a lot I swear. Smilie

If you don't know how good these cans are, check this out
http://www.head-fi.org/t/634201/b...ed-4-14-13

even if they sells at $270, it's still a bargain.
dunno why they sell such good headphone for such a low price? maybe the design?
