now I'm forgetting what the regular price was. looks like it went on sale for 85 last year and 59 in 2011. Is this an updated model by chance? I think I might hold out for a deal on a lower-profile model.
This thing is super flimsy.. I used this on my Element (had to custom fit it to the factory Honda roof rack cross bars using 2 1/4" U bolts & metal plates & drilling new holes) for 2 trips..
One from So Cal to Nor Cal & I was worrying about my cargo (sleeping bags & clothes for the trip) the whole time especially when climbing the Altamont pass (high wind area) as I heard the rubber top & bottom halves chattering.. I pulled over to see if the snap clasps had become undone, then decided to use ratcheting tie downs I had in the car since I was stopped & didn't fully trust it...
2nd trip was from So Cal to Burning Man where the white sand got in everything in the box & I was concerned someone would jack our sleeping gear since its so flimsy & easy to bust open
Put stuff you don't value in it on road trips for 2 reasons.. in heavy wind with all the locks & clasps engaged the 2 thin plastic halves chatter & in high heat the thin plastic bows to load on the bottom & the 2 halves feel like they're deforming or melting lol & it's probably really easy to pry & break open so it should be point a to point b, unload your stuff cuz it's seriously cheap & easy to break into..
I put oak slatted boards on the bottom to strengthen it from weight & hot weather bowing & used ratcheting tie downs in a cross pattern (like wrapping a present) to give the top & bottom some extra reinforcement from high winds & highway speeds (not that fast at all, the Altamont pass up north, Yosemite, & grapevine in So Cal are quite a challenge in the fully cargo loaded & underpowered E) since the side locks, front & rear snap clasps kind of feel cheap & in high wind on the highway it feels like you'll lose your cargo from the halves separating/chattering..
Also not sure if it was sitting in the Nor Cal sun for 2 weeks or Burning Man, but it turned a powdery light grey color (faded) that wouldn't wash off & return to its color when new... When not in use, it's stored in the rafters above the garage, so the 2 times I used it when it was out in the sun & dirt/sand, it faded lol
If you travel a lot & plan on using the cargo box often, I'd spring for a heavier duty Yakima or Thule box...thankfully for 2 people the E has ample cargo space for most of our trips
