This is very educational. I bought this one as a birthday gift for my neighbor's daughter. First she constructed was a simple house. For me, this toy enhances a child's creativity which is very helpful for a developing mind.

this is very expensive. i would buy one as a birthday gift for my kid. First he would construct a building. next he would call it his college, because $108 for 100 pieces of plastic with little magnets is ridiculous even for a developing mind. Smilie

10% off any deal is nice, but i cannot imagine this thread having a fire symbol next to it at all Smilie

Not to be that guy, but $108 could buy you a wii and like, 4 games. I'm sure there's a creative game out there...

Also doesn't have the child interacting with the physical world, which is certainly important.

While I agree that it *IS* very expensive for what it is, it's a GREAT FREAKIN' TOY -- my kids LOVE these things! And, from what I've read of similar products, the knock-off ones are only negligibly cheaper AND aren't nearly as good...

I used to teach preschool and hands down these are the best building toy for kids of all ages. First and foremost they are BPA free, which is so important when you have young toddlers who haven't learned to keep things out of their mouths. They are recommended for ages 3 and up, but I have used them with children as young as 2 and as long as they are supervised, they can have just as much fun with them. Magna Tiles are so different then Legos or other building toys. They let you build diagonally, in addition to sideways, and traditional up and down patterns. If your child wants to pick up their finished building, have them build it on a flat plastic tv tray. Then they can pick it up and move it without damaging their creation. Some of the kids loved the whole "destroy your creation" aspect where they could step on, kick, or punch their creations and make them fall over so they could have fun building all over again. Other kids wanted to make theirs so that they could show their parents when they picked them up. The little girl who lives in my neighborhood now, she's 5, has this set and enjoys building her own Angry Bird setups and then demolishing them with plush Angry Bird balls. The clear colors set is the best one in my opinion, it allows you to see inside, which means you can create forts, buildings, houses, spaceships, and so many other things that you can actually put your action figures inside of and then see them.

The Magna Tiles that we had in the preschool were kicked, stepped on, ran over with Power Wheels vehicles, crushed by tricycles, etc, and they just don't break. There were never any chips, cracks, or breaks in them. When they would start to get dirty, we would just wipe them down with Lysol wipes and they were good to go again. The only bad thing about them, is you can't play with them in water, all though the kids in preschool did that as well (it's just not recommended).
