Can someone share their thoughts about the WiFi only vs the 3G? Targeted offer vs non? I've only used the Kindle app on my various devices but am considering the Paperwhite. TIA!
Well the WiFi vs 3G comes down to if you're the type of person who maybe travels or spends a lot of time away from wifi (say by the poolside) and still want to browse for / buy books on the go. Personally I just prefer to load my paperwhite with a ton of books before leaving home and that's more than enough reading material for me.
As for the targeted offer I take it you're referring to "special offers" choices on amazon's page? They're both the same exact devices one is just programmed to show you some ads on your home page / screen saver (never while your reading) and to be honest I never even notice them anymore. Plus I hear some people say they occasionally have some good deals. You can buy the special offers kindle and then see how you like it and later decide if you wanna pay the $20 to have the ads stop showing up.
Amazon has made Kindle discounts available to Prime members in the past, could that be it? It looks like my wife's Prime membership has lapsed in the past few days so as of right now it says it's not working with a standard account.
Originally on Friday I renewed the Prime membership under my account and checked but neither of us had the targeted offer. I checked again today and her account had the promo available but mine didn't. I called them but they wouldn't let me use it with my account, even with the accounts being linked. I ended up placing the order under her account. Kind of annoyed by the process but at least I was able to work around it. TU to the OP.
how is the display compared to the regular e-ink kindle? i like the e-ink since it's easier to read than tablet lcd and stuff, but doesn't have any built-in light. does the paperwhite cause eye strain?
A possible nighttime issue with the Paperwhite is that you have a built-in white LED set, which might be a modified blue set, used for the reflective lighting. http://kindleworld.blogspot.com/2...hting.html Blue LEDs can keep you up at night.
Probably less of an effect though than staring at a backlit screen. If I really want to read to sleep I use a Nook Simple Touch with an incandecent reading light.
