This comes in a canon refurbished white box with "Refurbished" printed all over it. Its not suitable as a gift and it doesn't come in the original manufacturer packaging.
I already bought one from amazon one year ago. So I have box and everything with me.
I don't have a sony a37 but if you are coming from an old model p&s camera..Both would definitely give you a better picture and with a little time in reading in the internet give you great ones
thanks for the reply. i'm trying to understand the significant price difference between the t3i and the a37 (if both brand new and same lens package like 18-55mm), and if it's warranted. if it is, then the refurb t3i is really a good deal. i have checked several sites though comparing the specs and it seems the sony has a lot of good things going for it. there's too much technical jargon for me to digest though so i am not sure if i'm interpreting them correctly. is the canon name just more trusted that their cameras are much more expensive than sony's? or are these really in separate leagues, and hence the price gap?
dealwise, the a37 has the better 18-135mm lens as well.

Disagree. There are some excellent Canon zooms like the 17-55, the 24-70 II, and all the 70-200s. Speaking of primes, how's the build quality and bokeh of the 50 f/1.8?
within the context of someone just getting an slr and being cost conscious, the ones he could afford are ok. I say later that you can get some nice zooms at a good value, but most people don't expect to pay more for a lens than they do a body.
For instance, I just bought a 70-200mm f2.8L is mkii for a little under two grand... yes it is a great zoom, but I wouldn't really reference that within the context of that conversation.
Having a great time and visiting family are mutually exclusive.
and to answer your question... it was amazing for it's price. build quality feels like a toy as it is all plastic, but I kept mine in good condition and I eventually sold it for what I paid. it does get soft at 1.8 but it does sharpen up nicely around 2.8. actually, I don't see that much of a difference between the 1.8 and the 1.4.
I'd suggest either the fifty our the forty mm. both are an inedible value for what they bring to the table.
