I like my Lorex Live Ping LNC104 in my situation, because it doesn't look like an obvious cam. It's pretty much the same thing, except it's only 640x480. I'd never buy one at anywhere near full retail price though.

Definitely a lower price than normal on the dropcam.

Yeah, if you want stealth, this isn't the camera to pick.

The main unit actually comes off the base/stand which does make it much smaller, but it's clearly labeled "DropCam" Also, if you have the night mode enabled, the ring of red IR lights will obviously be a give away..but perhaps worse is the fact that it makes a very audible clicking noise any time those lights come on - which can be frequent as it seems to get confused about if it's needed or not (assuming you left night mode on "auto")

The HD is fairly nice. And remember kids, "wireless" doesn't mean there are no wires. It just means there are no network wires. You still need to plug the thing into a wall outlet for power.

Some other CONS to consider:

- You must pay a monthly fee to have any video recording capability. Without paying that, you only get live streaming.

- No onboard memory capability - wifi connection drops (which my does regularly but only to my Dropcam) and you lose camera.

The camera you mention looks/sounds superior in just about every way, except one big one - the HD quality video.

The video quality looks great from the live HD demos. However, their DVR service costs stink.

You pay $100/year for ONE camera. Additional cameras are an additional $50 EACH.

So you want three cameras for your front yard, back yard, and inside? That's $200/year And that's just for the the cheap plan. Might as well go with a real security company at that rate.

Give me the ability to run my own DVR software with them and we may be talking. Also, give me weatherproof housings so I can use outdoors. I would also like to see more IR ability. "Internal IR" means it just converts. You should be using external IR light for best security. And if you could find a way to do all this on batteries or solar, you'd have a real actual "drop cam".

I bought one of those cheap fake cameras on ebay. They are made to get people to notice them, that is their only useful attribute.

Anyone know of any easy to use systems to keep an eye on a few places for a farm? My parents need one (there's no internet there)
