I went to the advanced auto parts to pick up the Shell's Rotella synthetic oil. The salesman asked me about my car's mileage (around 100,000mi). He said it is better to use the high mileage formulation rather than synthetics oil due to the synthetics oil finer viscosity which is easier to "leak". When I switched to from heavy duty to synthetic oil after purchased my VW Passat from previous owner a year and half ago, I start to noticing engine losing oil. I am debating if I should switch back to heavy duty formulation.
I'll admit I don't own a VW and don't know what it specifically calls for, but it would shock me if it called for that type of oil. That is what I put in my diesel truck. It is specifically formulated for diesels, not gasoline based engines. It handles the soot and other characteristics diesels have. If I was you, and you are set on running a heavier oil, I would look at just a heavier weight, not one of a different class/formulation.
