Agreed. The point of LED TVs is to reduce heat and power consumption, and by extension size and weight. What's with manufacturers making them fatter than freaking plasmas?
I spoke with a television engineer at one point, and she told me that it was basically a trade-off between image quality and thickness, due to backlight technology and the ever-increasing demand for microscopic bezels and televisions that are easily wall-mountable. She told me that in surveys, people say they care about features most, then image quality, then reliability, then looks, but when they build things based on that data, people basically reverse the order, and just complain how they look. She also told me that she worked on LED designs, but believed that LED wasn't a real improvement over conventional LCD unless a full array backlight with full dimming control was utilized, and that LED was a waste otherwise. She worked for a "reputable brand" in the global LED market.

Just some thoughts from an "expert" that I thought might be relevant to this deal (although this argument is rehashed in every TV thread that is posted).

I have this exact television above my fireplace. I was fully aware of the EH vs ES and the thickness of the set. This is truly a non issue for me. Picture quality is more consistent in my opinion than the edge lit set. The bezel is very thin which gives off the illusion that it is a thin model as well from the front. There are some great picture calibration settings within the user reviews for the eh6xxx series on Amazon.

ive been waiting for this to go on sale today, trying to decide on this or the walmart lg 55inch for $720. I know that walmart deal is 3d but i wont really be using that feature, so would you guys recommend this one over that?
I recommend this one if you're looking for a no gimmick TV with great picture. The downside with this TV is that it has only 2 HDMI ports, not a smart TV, and No 3D. This TV is also about 2-3 years old now, for those who care.
The LG at Walmart is a Smart TV with 3D, I believe. I can't remember which model you are referring to. Also I think it is only a 60 hz. The 3D feature is a fading trend, I think they are moving toward a non-glasses 3D TV for the future, however, I swear you can only watch about an hour or two of 3D content before your eyes start to hurt badly.
A slightly lower model of this was sold at Best Buy on Black Friday last year for about $600. This is not a bad deal, I'd get this over the LG one you were referring to.

3d is great. No gimmick and wonderful to watch.
Do you get tired of the glasses? Maybe once in A while it would be ok but certainly not a regular thing.
Isn't the screen dimmer?

For the price, LG is much better than Samsung. Although most low-end models of LG are not really worth it, if you are willing to spend a little more money, you can get much more with LG than you would with Samsung TVs. Stop holding on to your oldschool viewpoint, Samsung is being outsold by LG in regards to LCD (LED) panels and LG has better designs also.

I' too have heard that LED LCDs is a downgrade from conventional CCFL LCDs in terms of picture quality... until you enter the realm of full array backlight with full dimming. And even then, depending on how the dimming is implemented, its hit or miss.

Lower end LGs are terrible. Mid range LGs are better than Mid range Samsungs. I would definitely take this tv hands down no contest over the cheap 60 hz LG at walmart..

I thought Id be worried about the depth, but I actually checked it out at a local costco this weekend and its not bad at all. Im still on the fence because Im hoping for a mid-range tv deal this memorial day.

So this is still 850 after taxes at my local costco. Is this a decent deal for an led(don't care about 3d/extra features)? Wanting to finish our livingroom setup.

Same question here. No better deal on a no frills 55" with great picture quality has come up at all, right? Thinking of going to Costco and getting it...
