$139.99 + $15.5 ($179.99 x 8.625% tax) = $155.50 out the door.

Call me when it drops to $99.

I saw this at my local Costco store yesterday. Costco has the Seagate Backup Plus 4 TB Desktop external hard drive for $139.99 after instant $40 off ($179.99 - $40 = $139.99). Item # 695080. It's also available online for the same price shipped. Most states will pay sales tax.

http://www.costco.com/Seagate-Bac...22923.html

Not sure when exactly this coupon ends, but online, it's through 5/11. These are now probably all Seagate's 1TB X 4 platter 5900rpm design (ST4000DM000) rather than the prior 800GB X 5 platter 7200rpm design (ST4000DX000) they had back in February. The ones I saw were mostly Thailand made hard drives with case/accessories manufactured in China. You can still read the label on the bottom of the internal box that's covered.

Specifications:
Automatic Backup: Yes
Brand: Seagate
Cable Included: Yes
Hard Drive Size: 4 TB
Interface Standard: USB 3.0
Number of USB 2.0: 1
Number of USB 3.0: 1
Operating System: Windows & Mac
Power Source: USB
Type of Interfaces: USB
USB Ports: 3
Weight: 1.73 lb.
Width: 4.38 in.
Theres some benchmarks floating around the 5900rpm isn't that much slower than the 7200pm because of the denser platters, plus the temperature is much lower.

Hmm, wouldnt that decreas the life span of the HD. i've read somewhere that it will do so. well i cant imagine 4tb of files (pictures/videos/documents) dissappear due to hardware failure.
I had a 1TB WD green drive connected to a DVR that was on all the time for 4 years.....it hasn't died yet...I would think this would be no different than connecting it to a router.
I think as long as you take care of it and don't introduce moisture, excess heat or shock to it, it could last long.

Buy from COSTCO people. Save the headache with warranty and Costco superb customer service. I had 3.5 yrs old drive that Costco replace for me without receipt, just my Amex member card.
Your Amex card is a receipt, I'm not discounting their service just saying its not quite the same as a "no receipt" situation when they have your card to pull up the sales ticket.

got this last time it went on sale. it's hooked into my ASUS router and all the computers in my house access its files off the network. works great, like a champ.
is there a way to hook this to the router, then use my ipad or iphone to play my MP3 music off the harddrive through the phone or ipad?

never did anything like this before. same with movies. is there a way to have this 3 floors up and i am in a basement with my ipad selecting files on the harddrive to play?

any advice before i buy this. thanks!

first plug in the hard drive to your router and set it up in the router configuration as a network drive.

the way i did was using a program called PLEX. to run plex, you'll need to have a computer that's always on. (a tiny little computer, but it must be at least core 2 duo over 2.4Ghz to push 1080p movies). doesn't TECHNICALLY need to be always on, it'll have to on while you use plex on the other devices.

ok, first go into network devices on that computer, find the hard drive on the network. right click it, go to Map Network Drive. this will give it a letter, like how you have your C drive. give it a letter. (i used Z). that will make a Z:/ drive that accesses files on the computer... but they're really on the hard drive hooked into the router.

that computer then runs a free program called Plex Media Server. google it. set up Plex Media Server to scan the Z: drive.

then you can stream any media using the Plex iPhone/iPad app ($5), or watch on your TV using the Plex app for Roku (FREE) or watch on a different computer using the Plex Media Client program (FREE).

Sometimes. You can ask for an exception for one day from the front desk. Or buy a membership & you can get a refund on it.

Awesome, went out to have BB price match this earlier, they didn't have any in stock locally. I decided just to order it on Amazon, and noticed it jumped to 177.99. I went to Newegg, and it's jumped to 189.99.
