Just got my Y500. Shipped in laptop box. Only one box bruise on a corner. Product seems OK. Will fire up shortly.
Ok, this has GT750 installed. Now got to figure out the Windows 8 UI and how it interacts with the touch pad.

If you want recovery discs for free call Lenovo and request them. They are free so long as you are under warranty so it's better to get them now just to be safe. As far as I can tell, there is no way to burn recovery media off the laptop so you need these discs from Lenovo (3 discs for Win 8 and the 4th is drivers).
I just called Lenovo support and the guy wouldn't let me get a set of discs.

So I set up my new Y500, no problem. Went through the set-up screens configured it for the home WPA2 network.
Now here is where I went wrong.
Windows setup asks if you have a windows live account (can't remember if it said you could set it up without one) and I do, so I went ahead and entered my account info. Setup finished, and everything seemed fine. I ran Microsoft update to make sure I had all of the latest updates, restarted the computer.
Now, what comes up after boot is the login for windows live. I enter the password for windows live, and the computer finishes booting and I'm back to my desk top. I'm poking around, trying to discover how to do this or that. I realize it's time to go to work. Shut down and pack it up and take it with me, I'll continue with discovery at work.
I get the computer powered up, it starts to boot, there is a screen that comes up (I guess it's officially called the lock screen) but it's a background picture, time and date in the lower left, with an icon for the Wi-Fi and the battery. If I click anywhere, the lockscreen pulls up, and there is the windows live login. I type in the password and get a "your windows live account is offline, use the first password that you used".
I never got to setup another user, never thought to do so, never thought that I had to have an open connection in order to use my computer.
I'm locked out till I get back home, where it can make a connection. The work connection has not been configured, and there is no way to access the network setting until you first log in. There is no way to log in because there is no available connection to windows live.
SO lesson here is DO NOT set up your windows 8 with a win live account unless you FIRST set up the local user and a password that gets you past user login.
Mad

I'm locked out till I get home. Bummer.
Oh, I called Lenovo support, all they could offer was one button restore and try to reset my windows live passwords. I doubt either one would have worked. I was locked out of the computer first off, and second, if there was no connectivity, resetting the live pw would have done nothing, because ther was still no way to communicate with the win live servers.

I wanted to give you guys a further update about the Y510p. It seems that Lenovo has enabled optimus with the y510p. It has an 3 options under the graphics card for the second card to either have it auto choose, intel default or nvidia default.

So there is one more thing the 510 has over the 500, optimus.

I too had this issue along with a few other quirks -- I had Win8 Pro laying around anyhow so I slicked it with clean and put 8 Pro on and there is a fantastic difference when starting from scratch and installing all the drivers yourself. Heaps better imho across the board.
Where did you get the clean win 8 pro image to work with?

Lenovo seriously has to be full of crap... so you got yours in a laptop box too? Oh weird.

Because after my first came in a laptop box and came dented -- Lenovo supposedly "has never heard, ever, of a laptop being shipped in that box" and sent me a second one saying it'd be shipped correctly. Guess what? My second, replacement one, came in a laptop box as well, and I can't tell if this one is refurbished or not. Had to wait 3 weeks for that replacement. I tried to get them to guarantee it'd be shipped in the appropriate container, and got a "sorry sir, it's being sent from China, we can't do that, but it should come in a normal shipping box this time."

I spoke with a supervisor who claims this was the first time he heard of it being sent in a laptop box as well. Just ridiculous. They're either naive or lying. Who ships an $800 piece of electronic equipment in a box like this, knowing what UPS does during the shipping process? Really irritating.

Yeah, they are lying.

I tried removing the ultrabay drive; removed the battery, pulled the latch and tugged on the cover, and it snapped off the dvd burner. Put some epoxy on the little lip that broke and snapped the cover back in next morning. Anyone know if the center back screw has to be removed to pull the ultra bay drive?
Other than that, the machine is super fast, boots in a few seconds. Quiet too.
Win 8 isn't as bad as you hear. I was able to figure out how to do a lot of stuff on my own. the search feature is finally helpful, too. Set up a bunch of the live tiles, streamed some free music, etc.
Still, the touch pad is sometimes twitchy, and I found myself trying to swipe the screen more than once. Found using a mouse for pointing and leaving the touch pad for the other stuff is the way to go.
Does someone make a gismo that simulates touch screens yet?

You shouldn't need to remove any screws to remove the ultrabay drive.

There's a tiny little unlock/lock switch that the battery covers (you'll see it after you remove the battery). Switch it to unlock, then press down the middle tab (in the middle of the underside of the laptop) while holding it down, pull the ultrabay/dvd drive out. Should come out easy, just make sure you have that tiny switch to the unlock setting.
