Thread Details

For anyone who ships USPS frequently, if you dont already know you can get free packing tape heres how:

Walk into the post office and ask for the free USPS priority mail packing tape!

Its that easy. You must ship priority with it most of the time.. I have been able to just say hey I only had this tape, but it doesnt need to go out priority (for cheap items).

Priority has its limitations, size and weight but its the cheapeast and fastest way to ship small packages! Compare pricing to others, you will find its the fastest for guaranteed 3 day delivery for your buyers.

The tape is great quality, and adheres very well. Good luck, just thought I would pass it on heart

Anything to help someone save a few bucks! When you ship out 50+ items a week, this saves alot of money!

Good luck, they shouldnt hassle you! Ive gotten atleast 35 rolls in the past year!

the post office offers free usps shipping boxes and envelopes, as well. for domestic and international.

All first class shipping supplies cost money-- all usps shipping supplies are free, not just the tape.

Ive been using free Priority supplies for a while, and while its nice to get everything delivered for your use, keep in mind that when you order supplies, you get ALOT of them, that includes boxes as well, and you will quickly realize you have more than you will need.

Also Priority is not guaranteed 3 day, it just averages 2-3 days, but if it takes longer you dont have much grounds for recourse. Once your shipments get too heavy, it ramps up in price considerably vs FedEx.

Can you not order the tape online? Or do you have to go to a B&M to get it?

You can't get the tape online.

Thumbs down because using Priority Mail supplies for anything OTHER than Priority Mail is stealing. It is related to the postage rate increases. It jeopardizes the USPS continuing to offer these supplies for free (for people who actually use them as they are intended to be used). And it very well may be illegal.

BTW - In case you didn't know it, you can also get free boxes from FedEx and UPS. I'd rather people steal from them rather than the USPS.

The OP never implied to use them for illegal purposes, but for those of us who ship a lot of goods using Priority Mail...

You used to be able to get the tape online, but now it's YMMV getting it from a USPS counter clerk.

Misusing USPS supplies is against the law and you can be fined, etc. However, the "punishment" you're more likely to encounter is that the PO will return your stuff to you as unmailable or charge you what you would have paid had you used the mailing supplies for their intended purpose (i.e., if you use a Priority Mail flat rate box to mail 4 ounces of feathers via parcel post, they're likely to make you cough up the $8.90 or whatever a flat rate box costs to send these days).

About 3 weeks ago, I used a flat rate box inside out, still priority...just not flat rate. I drop off boxes about 4 days a week at the post office, so they know me pretty good. Anyway, the clerk gave me a "notice for immediate release". She highlighted where it said that if they suspect you are using a priority box for non-priority shipping, they will send you a postage due bill. She said they just busted someone big time and send them a postage due bill for over $200. She did not say anything about returning it, but they are definately sending postage due bills to people!

I would guess it gets thumbs down because it's not FREE.

We the tax payers buy this tape and like everything that the Federal Government purchases I'm sure it's at a price 2-3 times what you or I could buy it for locally.

OMG smart guy. EEK!
Please don't waste our tax dollars using these supplies for something other than priority mailing. If they have been used by USPS already and you are recycling them, that's cool. yummy
I'm sure thousands are using these supplies for things other than mailing priority mail. vomit That adds up quick and costs us all more money. nod
Guess they could ask SD for your home address and thank you for your slick confession. LMAO
