Are these usable as NAS on a router? Been meaning to setup a NAS for years, but wasn't sure how you access the files from networked PCs. Does the router power the unit?
It depends on the router model but if it has a USB port then you can probably access files on it through your network.
And yes, 2.5" "portable" hard drives are powered solely by a USB port, unlike their larger 3.5" external counterparts that require another power source.
External hard drives typically offer more storage per dollar, potentially better performance, and they come in much larger sizes, so if your only plan is to leave it stationary by your router, that might be a better option. This is still an excellent deal and price per GB even compared to external though.
