"How do you imagine" to scoff at an established and legitimized professional class of athlete? Fortunately, your concurrence is not a prerequisite to its existence. Have fun being a dinosaur.
In other news, I've been using these for a few years. They work to be sure. Work is defined as providing moderate relief to eye strain over extended periods of time. They will not turn u into a pro gamer, however.
Got some of these for $25 @ deal-fisher. I wear contact lenses (myopia) with them. They are not a placebo, and they do reduce strain. They help with gaming because I don't blink very often when playing. The glasses also point of detail a bit better. My few complaints are that it makes my white LED clock a bit blurry which is ~ 5 feet away. I don't like the magnification in them and the amber tint gets old sometimes.
After doing a bit of reading I found a few things:
There are different types of coatings, Anti Glare and Anti Reflective. AG appears to be advertised for LCD while AR is for CRT monitors
These types of glasses may reduce eye strain, but you'd probably get better results through other means
From the quick search, it doesn't appear that these can actually cause damage
They certainly don't prevent any sort of drying of the eyes
The tints can increase contrast. In most cases this doesnt have anything to do with eye straing
Some have magnification which I guess could reduce eyestrain, but could be solved by other means
I couldnt find any scientific papers/studies backing these claims, more of 'Dr blahblah says', though I only did a quick search
Gunnar markets these poorly (or well depending on your take) using words like 'Xtreme' and pseudo scientific mumbo jumbo. This doesn't automatically invalidate the usefulness, but its hard to decipher what might be valid and can be backed up from that which is just pure lies. Its easy to just throw it all under the 'snake-oil' category.
In conclusion, it would appear that these might help some people, but not everyone, theres no solid evidence (from doing a quick search) for or against them. You're probably going to see much better results though by adjusting lighting in the room and the monitor settings (http://stereopsis.com/flux/) as well as practicing the 20-20-20 rule[lifehacker.com] or taking regular breaks.
