If you don't need "stuff" but would rather have Costco gift cards: tell the front desk at Costco that you want a refer-a-friend promo, give them a real Costco membership number (they look it up), and you'll get a pair of $10 Costco gift cards. You can give one of them to your friend if you want.
Above: NOPE. Just called both costco's in my city and neither would give the dual $10 cards to the "referee". Both said it is corporate policy to hand out only $10 per person, so only 1 gift card. They both hinted that the $10 should even be given to the referer and that I really shouldn't spend it.
The above person violated SD rule number one: don't call. Go to the desk and ask nicely. I did, I got $20 in gift cards. I get $20 and my friend gets a nicer housewarming present than he would have otherwise, in addition to writing in obnoxious red as if his word were canon.
*A while ago, I tried to get the referral bonus when signing up. They said there was none at the time and couldn't do anything. A week later, I come back to shop and they have signs for the referral bonus up. I went to customer service and asked if I could get it and they said no.
This promo is actually from the National Membership Program. The Prepaid Membership Activation Card will be mailed the National Membership Program coupons. You must purchase the Activation card from Zulily to qualify for the promotion. You must also wait to receive the Activation Card in the mail before you can Join Costco or Upgrade your membership. FYI here is a snapshot of what the coupons look like....
If you want to skip buying an activation card, you can download the precoded form and bring it directly to Costco to get all the benefits without going through a 3rd party.
