I own this and I love it. If you're thinking of going paperless, this is the way. I scanned 12 years of paper in literally less than 6 hours. Organizing, however, took a little while longer.

I ordered one from Costco on Friday. Can you share with me how you organized your files for the 12 years of paper. I am now faced with a similar problem.

I was just asked this last week in PM, so you've got great timing! Here's how I answered:

What I'm doing is basically this:

Dad
>Awards

>Bank Statements
>>Checking
>>Savings

>Bills
>>Cellphone
>>Credit Card 1
>>Credit Card 2
>>Student Loan

>Clients

>Medical

>Pay Stubs

>Receipts

Wife
>Awards
>Bank Statements
>>Mortgage

>Bills
>>Cellphone

Son
>Artwork
>Awards
>Bank Statements
>Education

Daughter
>Awards
>Education

Taxes

After I get it all named the way I want it, I'm going to probably back them up on Amazon [amazon.com] and leave 'em there. It's really secure and redundant.
I've got 3.5 gigs including my old scanned documents (that are from my old scanner that makes .JPGs). After I get them all up there, it'll be about 40 cents a month if I'm reading it correctly. You could go with a standard backup place like carbonite but it's $5 a month. I'm not the goodest at math, but 40 cents < 5 dollars.

How does this thing do with paper receipts? The long thin ones.

I'm hoping to replace my Neat stuff which I hate.

It's the best review of an older ScanSnap model. The review is pretty comprehensive and covers your question as well!

Not sure about Evernote price. It says $45 a year. That would be $3.75 month , not 40 cents. That's if my info is correct.

They mean to use the Amazon cloud backup service, instead of Evernote.

There are multiple locations you can use to back up your scanned documents, from free to premium, depending on how much space you use. Considering .pdfs can be relatively small, you may be able to get by with using free services like Dropbox and Google Drive, depending on who you want to be holding on to your documents.

I've got this scanner too. I'm not sure about the licensing terms, but Acrobat X Standard fetches at least $80 on eBay if you already have that software.

425-80 = 345 before tax, shipping

Also, this sometimes goes on Amazon Warehouse deals. Heads up for those who want to save extra 30ish and have lots of time to waste refreshing amazon page every day.

How secure is it leaving the documents on Amazon? Are you putting the files in Truecrypt or something first? I haven't checked if it has 2 factor authentication.

I have the iX500 and like it a lot, just looking ways to backup my documents offsite and keep it secure.

There was a newegg 15% off scanners coupon this weekend that made it $382 (coupon ended Sunday). If you sign up to be on newegg's email list they send out 15% off scanner coupons every few months it seems to me...
