I actually am looking for a new mattress in this price range. I recently ordered an Astoria 12" Queen Memory Foam Mattress [costco.com] for $599.99 plus sales tax from Costco.com, but haven't tried it out yet.

I am not very experienced with mattresses. Are these Simmons and Sealy ones better for around the same price? I chose to purchase from Costco because they have free returns.

Thanks for posting!

I have the Simmons Beautyrest Elite Palisades Park Mattresses plush pillow top (not firm) and while it is on the more expensive end I think it is every bit worth it if you are accustomed to pillow tops.

Since the one you listed was memory foam I am guessing that might be what you are more used to but it is all personal opinion on what feels best to you. While I have not heard of Asotria specifically I can tell you that I have been very pleased with Simmons line of beautyrest and haven't laid on another bed that comes close to the comfort and support mine gives me.

I purchased a firmer matress when I became disabled. The most expensive Sealy Posturepedic coil spring that was available from Sears. WIthin a year, I had to switch back to the old matress. It was like sleeping in a canyon and I'm a healthy weight Frown

2-3 years later I gave up on trying to get it replaced under warranty. Called sears and they said I have to call Sealy. Sealy says I have to call sears. Getting ready to open a bed and breakfast and Sealy will never get a dime from me again. Smilie

I am in the market for a new mattress; but, I don't know the first thing about purchasing one, besides the fact that I want a queen size. It seems like all of them are a little different somehow and makes researching confusing. I am a student, so I'm looking for something that is cheap (<$500). Would I be better off getting one from costco or from here?

For the box spring/frame, should I purchase it from the vendor or look for something cheap off amazon? How much of a difference does it make?

Also, how do I dispose of my old mattress? Will the delivery people take it or do I have to make my own arrangements....which I'm also unsure about since I live in an apartment complex....

Sorry for the ignorance! It's so complicated getting a new bed......

Thank you!

Is there any big box store (macy/sears...) equivalent to the beautyrest elite palisades park? No idea if it is good.

It looks like we're in the same boat - I'm just not a student at the moment.

There are much more knowledgeable people here, so I won't say too much. The one thing I do want to point out is that you do not need a bed frame or headboard; just the mattress and a box spring would work perfectly fine. Bed frames and headboards cost extra money, and if you're low on funds, you may want to just skip them altogether.

There indeed are many different types of bed. What I ended up doing is going to a few mattress and furniture stores and testing out mattresses made from different materials to see what I like. Don't go to a store owned by one manufacturer; go to one that offers mattresses made by many different brands. This one, you'll just have to test and find out your preference in regards to materials, type, and firmness (e.g., spring, pillow top, memory foam, firm support, medium support).

Hope this helps,
Tofu Vic

Is it easier to "perform" on a more firm or plush mattress? Keep in mind I'd also like a comfy sleep. I hate mattresses that are too bouncy or squeaky

Go to a mattress store and try them out. Different stores will have different model names for what is basically the same mattress for a given brand, so you'll need to compare the specs (coil count, firmness, pillow/euro top, etc.). I'm not sure if you can actually try out the ones that Costco has (the demo unit at the one I went to was still wrapped in a plastic bag).

I got the Queen Tomahawk Plush Firm with Euro Top and a box spring for $500 shipped a few months ago. The equivalent model at Ortho Mattress was on "sale" for $1300 (with a list price of $2600) plus shipping. You can just get a metal bed frame from Costco for around $40.

Thanks for the quick responses. I guess I'll have to go to a mattress store and see what I like the best....and try not to get more confused. Good to know that costco frames aren't too expensive.

After researching mattress and becoming frustrated at being unable to comparison shop between mattress sellers, I ordered a Tomahawk firm (queen) from US mattress. The specs (coil count, coil gauge, warranty) and brand name are very good for the price. Got it about 6 months ago, think I paid $500 for the mattress & box spring, which is $40 more than it's going for with this sale. A few sites recommended not purchasing a pillowtop, as the tops wear out, and can't be replaced without replacing the entire mattress.. Paired it with an ISOcool memory foam mattress topper from BonTon and it is absolutely amazing. Couldn't be happier.
Also, no issues at all with US Mattress, would recommend to others.
