WARNING... I suggest checking on inventory with FreedomPop before delivering for more insight. Devices are on back order still but they are filling them in order and they do seem to be going out. Ordered mine June 15th and got mine in about 3.5 weeks. They comped me 1GB extra and $10 acct credit balance are being comped for Overdrives (not pros) that are still back ordered

Just an FYI: Please note that these are refurbished/used (scratched but working) devices.
Q: Does anyone want to share their emails so we can all connect and get more MB usage? Is that allowed?
A: See post for FreedomPop Friends: http://slickdeals.net/f/5276432-FreedomPop-Friends?v=1#post_message_53620526
B: See video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ARO5fXTCo0

Your subscription begins when you click Activate. It will ship 27 days after you buy it, but that is your "free" month!- FreedomPop has stated several times in the later part of the thread and on their blog that trials are being extended and "Plan period will start after the shipping date (not the purchase date)."

They maybe clearing these out to make way for LTE enabled devices that are coming later this year:

This deal is best for those who will use ONLY 4G, and will keep their usage between 5 and 500 MB/month.
-If you want to use 4G only, you can downgrade to the 500MB/month plan (free if you use between 5MB and 500 MB/month, $0.99 as a maintenance fee if you use less than 5MB/month).- Maintenance fee has been discontinued, see below "Why why i charged .99 cents"
-If you want to be able to use 3G and 4G, or only 3G, you need to pay for a plan that starts at $3.99 for 500MB/month.

Defective Chargers: Some batteries/ chargers have been reported as defective or not working. Email or pm them to get a Free replacement + Free shipping of replacement.

FAQs

Is data rounded to the nearest megabyte?
Data usage is never estimated when calculating for pay as you go or plan data charges. FreedomPop calculates to the byte, breaks down data usage into 15 minute increments and only charges for actual data used. Data is however rounded on our website’s user account pages for easier data monitoring and tracking purposes for our subscribers.

Why was I charged $0.99?
**UPDATE: This fee was discontinued on 6/13/13 according to their blog post [freedompop.com].**
In order to keep our service free, we must offset costs charged to us by our wireless network carrier partners. It is a way for us to provide free data on a daily basis to all active users of our service, which averages over 500,000MBs daily. To prevent this nominal fee, all you need to do is log onto your device and use 5MBs within each billing cycle.
Quote from FreedomPop View Post :
When a user uses less than 5MBs/ month, there can be a $0.99 cent fee to keep your account active. It is easily avoided though by either turning it on and checking a few emails. Another option is to "share data" with another friend and that will count towards "using 5MBs". However, if you absolutely don't think you can use the device each month, you can contact customer service and they can have it waived.
I don't want the service anymore, the device is also mine to keep, now how to I cancel this "free" service so I don't get charged $0.99?/month
Cancel the service. [freedompop.com]

Is there a restocking fee?
Handling and restocking fees will apply and depend on the condition of the returned device. We are charged a fee by our logistics partner to test the device and ensure it is still in working order. This fee is deducted at cost per our T&Cs and is nominal.

Can I bring my own device (BYOD) and use your services?
In order to take advantage of our services, you do have to purchase a FreedomPop device. All devices come with a 30 day return policy and a 90 day warranty. After the initial 30 days, your "Sierra Wireless Overdrive" device is yours to keep.

What happens after my free promotional trial plan is over?
At the beginning of your new billing cycle, the payment method on file will be charged for a new month on this data plan. If you do not wish to continue on this data plan, the plan can be downgraded by contacting our help desk at http://bit.ly/contactfp

What happens when I exceed my data limit?
Depending on if you are on our Free 500MB plan, or any paid plan your account will have additional funds added to your account when you’re within 100MBs of your plans total monthly capacity data limit. Once funds are added to your credit account, you will be charged on a Pay As You Go basis. You can opt out of automatic top up service at any time, though you may experience interruption of your Internet service if limited funds remain in your credit account.
If you want to cap your data plan at 500MB (in case you are on that plan), you can disable automatic top up through your Account page under Billing Settings. This forfeits you 100 mb though, your data for the month will be capped at 400MB [freedompop.com]... Your service will be disabled as you approach your limit and when your cycle renews, you'll get a new 500MBs.

What happens to my remaining credit balance?
Any credit left in your account will stay in your account until it is used up; it doesn't expire and it will rollover to your next billing cycle

This is a 3G(Sprint cellular)/4G(WiMAX) device. Why do I only get 4G coverage?
The free data plan is only 4G (WiMAX). You can pay an additional $3.99/month to get 3G (Sprint) coverage but it is not mandatory.

**NOTE** THIS IS FOR THE OVERDRIVE, NOT THE OVERDRIVE PRO.
The Overdrive (non-Pro) is bigger, has a smaller screen, and flatter.
  • PRO: Up to 35% faster boot-up time
  • 45% larger screen
  • Smaller footprint than regular Overdrive
  • Same battery for both devices, but does anyone know if battery operating time is the same?
Overdrive 5 devices and Pro 8 devices connect to hotspot
Overdrive suppost A/B/G and Pro support wireless A/B/G/N

Thanks

Very sleazy, these guys charge for usage alert emails before exceeding data plan capacity limit "Only $1.99/month – limited time offer"
Don't sign up for the alerts. It's easy to log into their portal and manually check.

Thanks to the OP, if we really can switch to the free 500MB/month plan it's not a bad deal.
Quote from wasssup View Post :
Wait, why does it say $3.99/month for 500MB in the summary of plan details (when I'm logged in)? I see no option for a free account.
You can, but when logged into your account, you navigate to the Data Plans section, and there is a very small link to downgrade your plan to the free w/ 500MB, once you confirm, you're good to go!

If it sounds too good to be true, It probably is. I am staying away from this one. It sounds as if they have lots of hidden fees.
I've used this now for 6 months, yet to have one fee. My rules are to use it at least for a couple MB each month to avoid the dormancy fee, and just don't sign up for any services I didn't need. Haven't gone over the 500MB yet.

LOL obvious self-promotion... The link goes to freedompop.com/slickdeals50offer
Regardless of how this got here, it's still a really good deal. I got my Photon hotspot that's only 4G for $99, so this with 3G for $30 is a way better deal. Flag the thread if you want and let the Mods figure who/how this was posted.

For those who are going to buy this and switch to the "free" 500mb plan, from their blog....
So in other words, it seems like you can only use this device for "free" in the 4G areas. If you want to use your 500mb with the 3G network, you need the "PRO 500MB 4G/3G" plan which is $3.99 a month
I've yet to need to sign up for 3G, which is why I'm still using my 4G only device (live and work around NYC). But if I'm traveling for business to a 3G only area, the I believe $4.99 a month to extend service to 3G (which I can always take off the bill for next month) is all-but guaranteed to be a better deal than hotel wifi rates - for each day.

Not to mention they started my 30 day 'trial' today, even though my device wont arrive for 3-7 business days. I'm beginning to get concerned.

See attachment for some of the extra services they charge for.
Yes, I had the same issue with service starting when they put the device in the box. I emailed back and forth with them, because it also took about 10 days to get the device. They said they need to do that so it arrives staged and ready to use (instead of a potentially 2 hour period I'd have to wait while it is staged). I said that might be good for some people but not a concern for me, yet I was very concerned 1/3 of my plan was used while UPS moved the box around. Eventually they credited my account the ~666MB to apply to the next month (which I then downgraded to 500MB, so actually having over 1GB free my second month).

Also, this coverage map should help some people out:

I have this device.

It connects to Sprint's 4G network only, however if you pay a subscription fee (around 3.50/mo) you can access 3G as well. Another subscription service will let you transfer up to 500mb to the next month for a maximum of 20GB of data for your use.

Users can earn up to 500mb extra per month by having 'friends' that also have it. I'm not positive if you get 500mb extra monthly for having friends, or you have to add them each month to get the 500mb extra data. (This would mean you get 1GB of 4GB data free)

My connectivity is fairly decent using it. Battery life is acceptable at an average of 2 days of moderate use, though the unit heats up like mad.

Note that the wifi units are refurbs and come with a black piece of tape on top. I don't mind; the battery itself is new and the whole thing is fairly straightforward to configure. Password to connect to the router is either 'freedompop' or 'password', they set it to one or the other, and the in-box instructions say password, while the website says to use 'freedompop'. That was the only source of confusion for me.

I've used about 300mb of data on my tablet in two weeks. I have the maximum needed friends to gain the 500mb extra data, so I should be able to get by with only having the rollover data plan, and building up my extra storage.

I really am glad I bought this, for the price they are offering you're really getting a bargain.

Thanks for the review. I have the TMobile 5gb/month plan, and I'm trying to decide if getting this is worth it. I never go over my data limit, but I wouldn't mind being able to downgrade my plan to something cheaper.

My biggest concern is the $0.99 / month fee if you don't use it. Is there any way to disable your account or something for a few months?

Why not just get the $35 unlimited Virgin or T-Mobile plan for unlimited phone / txt / data.. use your existing phone.. and use a app to turn the phone into a hotspot? Wouldn't it save all the trouble of paying $9 shipping for this device and having to return it and getting dinged for other return fees?

Also, this is the refurbished overdrive pro which is back ordered. I bought one two weeks ago and it still hasn't shipped.

The $30 is a one time fee for this device. If you use it for 4G only, and use less than 500mb, there is no monthly fee.

Is that additional free data per that specific month or lifetime(like dropbox)?
Looks like its per month.
They also offer 50mb when you connect your account to a friend

A little annoying, nevertheless does everything I need and potentially for free (after this $29 device/trial fee).

Thanks for the info!

Part of the issue might be coverage? I keep hearing of PagePlus'ers that end up picking up one of the FP devices as a supplement since PP has limited data (but they are on VZW's Prepaid network, which I think is quite expansive in terms of coverage/quality). I'm on PagePlus currently and picked up a FP device. I figure it'll pay for itself soon enough.

Hey, the article in Tom's Hardware is the Overdrive Pro. Our promo for slick deals is actually for the Overdrive non-Pro model. It connects to Sprint's nationwide 3G and 4G WiMAX network just like the Pro and has an lcd screen, but its slightly larger (roughly half an inch).

Saw the downgrade button if you press on my plan, gives big message.
But didn't confirm why not use the 2gb data first.

My biggest concern is the $0.99 / month fee if you don't use it. Is there any way to disable your account or something for a few months?

I'm on T-Mobile's $50/mo plan, but shared up with my girlfriend on a post-paid plan with a 15% corporate discount.

I don't use my phone as a hotspot though it's included in the service because it destroys battery life. While the wifi hotspot takes 1-2 minutes to start up, it comes in handy when I stop in at a cafe with no wifi or my girlfriend takes extended time at a clothing store, or one of us has to do work while we're in the car. Tons of uses, and great when paired with a tablet. It also spares my phone's battery life.

The $.99/mo fee can be avoided if you either sign up for SOME sort of subscription (I do the data rollover, so I can accumulate lots of data for the future, it's literally a few cents a day) or just turn on the thing and let it sit for a few minutes (communicate with the server). I carry this daily in my day pack, and it gets used at least twice a week.

If you don't think you'll be using this at least two times a month, DO NOT GET IT. You're better off just using your phone as a hotspot those two days, or just find a place that has wifi. If you're going to use your phone with this, don't bother, just use your phone. I'd only recommend people who use wifi tablets with no 3g connection, or laptops for a light bit of browsing/work. I use reddit primarily, check my e-mails and some web browsing.

Make sure you disable auto-updates over wifi on your tablet, otherwise you'll hit your limit in no time.

Too bad the coverage appears to be limited to major metropolitan areas. Apparently, Indianapolis, IN isn't a major metropolitan area.
We haven't updated the coverage map located on our website quite yet, but you can go to coverage.sprint.com and select "Data" followed by "3G and More" to view 3G coverage and "4G WiMAX" to view 4G services. LTE is not available at this time, but we hope to be able to offer it sometime third quarter.
