I got mine, yesterday (the version posted by original poster).
The touchpad goes haywire after maybe 30 minutes of usage and needs a system reset to come back! Searching through forumns shows it was a known issue for the y500 for touchpad's manufactured by Elan. The one I got has that touchpad
Probably going to send it back, because it's un usable without a mouse.
Processed my RMA. It was very quick and automated, which actually left me with a bad feeling: "they don't actually care that I had a terrible experience and the laptop the sold was unusable due to touchpad. They'll just re-certify, re-package and resend to another customer."
I think the 1920x1200 res is too much for me on this computer. The text is very small and hard to read and constantly messing with zoom in the browsers is a real pain. Shame b/c I like the laptop overall, it's super fast and the build quality makes it seem like the computer would last, but I do too much reading to be hassled with the text size. FWIW, I've been using 1440x900 on a 15.6 for the past 5 years. I couldn't imagine someone who's used to a low res screen trying to get convert to this Y500.
One last update, I take back what I said about the resolution, it's certainly an adjustment but I'm liking it now. 1600x900 might be ideal for me but whatever.
What I will not be able to adjust to is the worthless touchpad which renders this laptop useless on the go. I got the elan model which seems to be infamous after doing some research. The mouse jumps all over without touching anything, it will highlight random things and then click...just like it has a mind of its own. Apparently this is due to some type of electrical interference which possibly can be solved by dismantling the entire computer and putting electrical tape underneath the pad(lol).
Unfortunately the saying "you get what you pay for" seems to have proven true here. They probably dumped off all the returned elan touchpad y500's. I highly suggest you guys check out what model you have and do some extensive testing before the return period is up. I'm trying to click right now on this POS and the mouse is going apeshit...this thing is going back next week
