Thread Details

Apologies if this thread exists already, I haven't found it if it does.

Purchased from B&M today.

Per previous thread, Costco still features the "old" version of T-Mobile Plans. This means that for those nefarious slickdealers, you can get the phone for $149, then soon after pay $200 early termination fee, giving you the S4 out of contract for $349 + Taxes

All Costco phones come with an accessory kit which includes car charger, sceen protector, and some useless stuff as well.

They also have a coupon for $30 off "unlimited" data plan.

For those worried about 16GB, this phone has an expandable memory slot, so you can cheaply add another 64GB if needed.

If you dont already have a Costco membership, they offer refunds for those who purchase membership and decide to cancel it.

Dupe thread.

Also, you have to pay T-Mobile for one month of service, bringing your cost to $400 after cancellation.

Wonder if BB will PM Costco since I have a few GCs to burn and if you do the ETF route there is no extra fees at BB. But does BB have those old Tmo plans still or not?

Still like at least $150 or more lower than you would pay for buying the phone outright.

The other thread is about the S3 for $0.01. This one is about S4.

If you buy online, you cannot cancel your contract within 90 days of purchase. If you do, you are required to return the phone. Otherwise, they will charge the full price.

I am not sure if this is true for B&M purchases though.

I plan on keeping the contract for awhile so I haven't tried it. But per rep. at the store, I would be able to cancel the contract and keep the phone, I would only be required to pay the early term. fee. Per the contract I received, I don't see any requirement to return the phone in the 90 day period either, I only see early term. fee of $200 if there is 180 days or more left on the contract.

The only reference to 90 days is that Costco has a 90 day return policy on the phone (vs 14 days thru TMobile directly). However if you elect to return the phone but it is after 14 days, TMoble would still not let you out of the contract without paying the $200 early term fee. The practical benefit of this policy is that you could decide between day 15 and 90 that you don't like that particular phone and could get another phone, for example HTC One or another smartphone instead.

So what is the lowest Tmo plan you would need to sign at Costco with a S4?

I believe the lowest cost rate is $70 (unlimited talk/text/data but data speed slows down after 2.5GB), but if you go for the $80 plan (doesn't slow down after 2.5 GB) you get $30 credit with the current promotion so it actually comes out to $50.

I think for those who like the TMobile service, an option is to purchase this phone with the $80 plan (Which comes to $50 for the first month with the current promo.), then cancel service after 30 days and open TMobile Prepaid plan which is $50 per month for the equivalent of the $70 Plan mentioned above. It gets cheaper with multiple lines as well. Also worth looking into, I believe WalMart and some others also sell this same TMobile service for even a bit less, $45 or so per month for the first line for again the equivalent of the $70 plan mentioned above.

Can you buy the phone/plan at costco and then pay a migration fee of 200 dollars to a simple choice plan ?

I would think so as the $200 terminates the contract, but I have not tried it.
