Anyone have experience with web filtering on a Chromebook?

I'm thinking about getting my soon to be 8 year old a Chromebook for her birthday. But, I don't want to give her open access to the Internet. I'd like some web filtering capabilities. Any suggestions? Extensions? Free/cheap proxies? I could use my DDWRT router for the home connection. But, that doesn't solve the issue when she takes it elsewhere. Thanks!

You can set the DNS on the device to opendns which has options for web filtering. I would not consider this the end of solution but its a step in the right direction.

3rd for OpenDNS. Look into the Management Console as well, it looks like you can do some whitelisting and more https://www.google.com/intl/en/ch...nsole.html

OpenDNS with Family Shield might be exactly what I'm looking for. I've already been using OpenDNS. I just never knew they had free parental controls. Thanks!

opendns does not help with browse by ip;
if she finds a link like http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/page
my router/home firewall has an option to disable browse by ip feature;
also you check your router if has option to modify url for google safe search.

in any case it's really easy to bypass opendns;
at home i am running : http://www.ipfire.org/
it has content filter addon

A layered approach might work well. The problem with a pure router options is all the child would have to do is take the laptop out of the house and be live online.

This is exactly why I can't use just the router. She will be taking it out of the house. But, I could still tie her MAC to a certain IP and control it at home as well.

I once prayed to God for a bike, but quickly found out he didnt work that way...so I stole a bike and prayed for his forgiveness. Angel Not

This is a Chromebook though It runs the Chrome OS which none of those things are compatible with, so they are not really options for a Chrome book.

The Management console here https://www.google.com/intl/en/ch...nsole.html is the only thing I think that really applies. Some of the Google Groups might have an idea too.

I ordered the Chromebook today. $184 shipped Like New from Amazon Warehouse Deals.

I'll check out the management console along with the others when it arrives.

If there was only a way to force it to always have to VPN into your DDWRT router unless you supply a password.

It looks like I'm going to use a combination of the OpenDNS FamilyShield and one of the extensions that KydDynoMyte linked to. Blocksi seems to get good reviews and its easy to use. But, it is easily disabled by the user. I was hoping to find one that I can control from my profile and keep her from making changes in her profile.
