$349 for 18-55mm version:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...os_product

BH Photo: No tax to NJ, CA
Amazon: now collects NJ tax (7%), CA tax (8.75%)

Here is decent tripod to go with this camera

Review by dpreview [dpreview.com].. ken rockwell is NOT reputable. "ken rockwell is the chuck norris of photography"

New firmware improves auto focus speed [canonwatch.com]
Samples from B&H already appear to have latest firmware loaded, surprisingly. Comparison in performance [canonwatch.com]. Don't expect a miracle with the 22 mm and new camera firmware!

How to check your firmware out of the box:
-Turn on camera
-Rotate the mode dial on the top of the camera to the middle position - between auto (green) mode and video.
-Push INFO button and touch [CA] (creative Auto) and scroll with buttons over to select [AV] (aperture priority mode)
-Push MENU button and go to the wrench with 4 dots
-Bottom of screen lists your firmware version

No built in flash. Speedlite 90ex is about $140 extra. --> set up a slick alert for 270EX II ~$125 way way better than 90EX. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)
No view finder.
Canon EF lens adapter sells for $149 on Amazon
- bulk /grey market versions of same adapter can be found for under $100 on eBay from HK sellers $100
Third Party "Chinese made" Adapters with AF ability sell for 50 dollars on Ebay

Note that the white camera has a glossy finish and is a little more slippery than the black matte version.

You're welcome.

The sensor on the newer Olympics are significantly better, but I'm not sure how much you'll gain while backpacking. I'm sticking with an E-PL1, largely for the same reasons. The PL5 looks really nice, but not $400 nice vis-a-vis my current camera. I'm not sure how much smaller m4/3 will get, if size is paramount, you might want to take a look at the Sony RX100. The Nikon 1 is a good deal smaller as well, and in good light, performs quite well. The fire sales make the pricing palatable.
Why would you stick with the PL1 when the PM1 body is $130 right now?

In for one with the 22mm f2 lens from Amazon for the same $299 price.

I also picked up a white box copy of EF-M 18-55mm lens for $134 and a generic EF/EF-S M Mount adapter off EBay for $45.
How well this generic M mount adapter works compared to one from Canon for which they charge $149 ?

OK sorry if stupid question but is the camera image stabilized or is it the lens if you buy that way?

I have no idea, but was willing to take the chance considering the price difference. My expectation is that it will be nearly identical. I guess I will find out, when it gets here.

only lenses are image stabilized, if you want camera body to be image stabilized - the only company that does is Sony.

The stabilization is in the lens, not the body. That said, I believe the 22mm lens is NOT stabilized, but the 18-55mm lens is.

Also, this camera does NOT have a built in flash. Plan on adding a flash for low light situations. Image stabilization helps eliminate camera shake, but does nothing to eliminate movement of your subject.

Gotta tell you all... If you're looking for portability, I would recommend that you strongly consider the new Canon SL1. Yes, it's over twice as expensive as this, but there are some benefits worth considering...
You get a viewfinder and flash.
You get a great 1.6 crop sensor, allowing for very good low light shooting. (Edit: Sensor is same size with deal camera. SL1 uses Digic 5+ sensor, EOS-M Digic 5. Not sure if much of a difference there in terms of noise performance, so nix this point).
You get the 18-55stm zoom lens, which has received good reviews.
You buy into the EF-S lens system (as opposed to EF-M) which is more versatile and doesn't need adapters.
If you throw the 40mm on the SL1, you now have a very good camera which is not much bigger than this EOS M with its lenses.

Here's a link to the camera (at B&H, but it's sold everywhere): Canon SL1 [bhphotovideo.com]
Here's a link comparing size: Camera Size Comparison [camerasize.com]

Is the SL1 as ultra portable as the EOS M? Not AS ultra portable, but very portable indeed. You can easily throw the SL1 in a messenger and have a very versatile camera whenever you need it. (I do this with my T4i and 40mm and carry my camera with me everywhere!).

Just some alternate considerations. Hope it helps!
Looking at it on camerasize.com...the EOS M is way smaller less than half the size depth wise and two thirds the height. (Of course, this is both without the lens, but still.) I have a T2i and the 40mm pancake, but it is still a bit too wide to carry in my messenger bag with my laptop in it.

But I went for this mainly to have a camera I can always keep in my bag (unnoticeably) that has an awesome sensor plus can be used as a B-cam to my T2i when shooting video.

If it helps you to decide,

I KNOW it will sit in my bag 99% of the time and I bought it anyways.

I'd love the SL1 w/ a 40mm pancake. Just LMK when they both hit $300 Stick Out Tongue

I think it will work. I'd be interested in hearing your impressions once you get it and play around with it.

I picked up one of these Timbuk2 inserts (in Xtra Small size) to throw in my messenger: Camera Insert [amazon.com]

My T4i with 40mm fits nicely in the center compartment and the other compartments are for anything else I tote around (keys, wallet, etc). But I use my tablet in my messenger and not my laptop, so that might make a size difference. I just have a run of the mill messenger bag - here's what I have: Nautica Messenger [amazon.com]

When I'm not carrying the T4i, I carry my LX7. It's OK, but I'm not happy with it like I am the T4i. More often than not, I'm with the T4i when I'm rolling about. I'm about to sell the LX7 since I hope to be picking up a FF soon. The T4i will be my travel/everyday grime cam.

Have fun!

Olympus does as well and the reason I stick with them as it gives you more options for lenses and always have IS.

The PL3 combo in black is only $240 right now at Newegg flash. While the sensor might be a little behind, it still takes great pics, comes with an add on flash, has a tillable screen and you have a plethora of lens options. Think it's the best bang for the buck going right now.

Well, yeah. That's the thing.
For FF, I got the Nikon D600...much better in features than the Canon 6D. Unless you're going to get the Canon 5D MIII, I would go for Nikon for full frame.
