$349 for 18-55mm version:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/...os_product

BH Photo: No tax to NJ, CA
Amazon: now collects NJ tax (7%), CA tax (8.75%)

Here is decent tripod to go with this camera

Review by dpreview [dpreview.com].. ken rockwell is NOT reputable. "ken rockwell is the chuck norris of photography"

New firmware improves auto focus speed [canonwatch.com]
Samples from B&H already appear to have latest firmware loaded, surprisingly. Comparison in performance [canonwatch.com]. Don't expect a miracle with the 22 mm and new camera firmware!

How to check your firmware out of the box:
-Turn on camera
-Rotate the mode dial on the top of the camera to the middle position - between auto (green) mode and video.
-Push INFO button and touch [CA] (creative Auto) and scroll with buttons over to select [AV] (aperture priority mode)
-Push MENU button and go to the wrench with 4 dots
-Bottom of screen lists your firmware version
(credits to m3m3)

No built in flash. Speedlite 90ex is about $140 extra. --> set up a slick alert for 270EX II ~$125 way way better than 90EX. Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)
No view finder.
Canon EF lens adapter sells for $149 on Amazon
- bulk /grey market versions of same adapter can be found for under $100 on eBay from HK sellers $100
Third Party "Chinese made" Adapters with AF ability sell for 50 dollars on Ebay

Note that the white camera has a glossy finish and is a little more slippery than the black matte version.

For the people who recently purchased and are disappointed with the AF (and have the updated firmware) - try the following:

Set the mode dial to the middle setting (between auto and video).
Enter the menu, go to the 2nd icon (with two dots over the camera).
Change the AF operation to One Shot.
Change the AF method to FlexiZone AF with the box (the option at the bottom).
Set Continuous AF to disable.

See if that improves the AF speed for you. I used the camera for a few weeks with the old firmware, and it was ok, but if there was any significant motion while it was trying to lock AF, it would fail. Now it locks without issue almost every time, even in low light.

I can test this versus the 14mm on a GX1 when I get it on Friday. I am replacing the GX1 because in the end a larger sensor is worth the slower focus speed.
You should consider moving to the Olympus side. Any of the cameras with the OMD sensor (OMD, EP5, EPL5, EPM2) will have equal/better performance than this camera and the GX1 Smilie

Cameras aren't graphics cards. As much as sites like snapsort try to quantify things and create winners are losers that's just not the way it works. People use cameras in different ways. A feature that is critically important to one person might not matter at all to others.

If the focus speed in this video isn't fast enough for what you shoot there are countless other options.

Sorry, but I don't believe it. Snapsort gives the full frame, top of the line 1DS Mark III an 80 for IQ versus 74 for the 3N. 5D Mk III gets an 81.

Right.

NEX does have better IQ, but it is going to be barely noticeable - the glass will be the biggest differentiator. NEX has 1.5x crop factor versus 1.6 for the canon, the NEX sensor is slightly larger.
What don't you believe? You say that the 9 point difference between the 3N and the EOS M is so small as not to matter. So are you saying the smaller 6 point difference between the 1D and 3N is just as inconsequential so the NEX 3N is just as good as the Canon 1DS M3? You can't have it both ways. Either a 7-9 point difference matters or it doesn't. If it does than the 3N has better image quality. If it doesn't than people are wasting their money on a 1D when a 3N at a 10th the price is just as good. Which is it?

Also, snapsort doesn't give anything. They are just quoting DXO.

I am in the same boat. The thing is that the OMDs are too expensiveFrown I am not sure I am committed enough to drop 800 dollars on a camera. They do drop in price pretty fast. For lens, I probably won't lose too much but I can't say for the body. I was told that my 199 GX1 was sold for 500 back in 2011.

Then cameras are just like graphics cards. Since a card that is too slow to run the games one person plays could run another person's games perfectly fine.

I won't shit on the camera since at $299, it's about half the cost of the Nex-5R. In fact, it's probably the best camera at the the price.
Yes the EOS M 22mm kit is half the price of the 5R, but the EOS M zoom kit is the same price as the NEX 3N zoom kit. The 3N is as fast as the 5R.

The GX1 sold for $700 body only new. It barely came out in 2011, it's more of a 2012 model. Micro 4/3rds cameras do not hold their value well.

The Olympus cameras that have great image quality are the ones with the Sony sensor. They have almost the IQ of a NEX. You can get a NEX for the same price as this EOS M right now.

There are various places. These come with kit zooms and can be compared to the EOS M kit zoom price of $350.

NEX 3N kit for $348 at Fry's. There's a SD thread about it.
NEX F3 kit for $321 at Fry's. No thread, here's the link.

http://www.frys.com/product/71881...IN_RSLT_PG

Those Fry's deals are B&M. For people without a Fry's you can get the F3 kit refurbished directly from Sony for $349. You can find it at outlet.sony.com.

For people adverse to all this, the NEX F3 is/was new at Target for $399. It's been at the price often if it's not at that price right now. It was last week. It's a little more but you get the comfort of Target's no hassle return policy and the convenience of stores everywhere.

I got the 3N from BB after PM to Frys for $348 with 16-50m lense. I also ordered EOS-M with 22m from Amazon but it will not be here until August.

Since I never play with the EOS-M, I don't know how bad is the AF versus AF on 3N, so far the AF on 3N is alright. A couple of SDers (including you) do mention that AF on 3N faster. Look likes I'm keeping my 3N.

Quote from sunnysidescape View Post :
As posted by someone in this thread already, it's still slower than the 3N.

The reported focus speeds for the EOS M are all over the place depending on which review. From merely slow to very slow. Let's rough it out to be about 5 times slower than the 3N using the old firmware. So the new firmware makes it about twice as fast. So with the new firmware the EOS M should be about 2.5 times slower than the 3N. As another point of reference, the GX1 and the 3N are almost the same speed.

Google and you'll find reviews from people with a NEX and the EOS M commenting on the speed of the new firmware. It is slower. One person put it like this.

"So the big question. Is autofocus performance improved in terms of speed? Yes, it is better. Is it a lot better (as in NEX-5n better)? No, but it is Fuji X better. An NEX-5n or OM-D will still kick its butt around the corner and I won’t even talk about the size of the can of whup-ass the RX100 would open on it. "

Take that statement with a grain of salt. That guy is Canadian and you know how polite and unwilling they are to offend.
Sunnysidescape, thanks for the info. Looks like I'm going to keep my 3N.

Or as I said your own opinion which others might have. Image quality is simply a persons opinion when it comes to todays cameras. Snapsort has it 74.0 to 65.0. Sorry but you are not going to see the difference with it being that small.
nope, it's not my opinion, it's a fact.

what's even funnier is you corrected yourself by stating the differences.

There's a reason the value of this camera tanked from $800 to $300, and its not just the AF.

How much is a fast (f/2 or faster) wide angle prime for the Sony?

The only one I can think of that fits the bill would be the Zeiss 24mm f1.8. That goes for a little over a grand the last time I checked.
