Costco has the Seagate Backup Plus 3TB Desktop External Hard Drive for $99.99 + Tax (if applicable).

http://www.costco.com/Seagate-Bac...07783.html

You can order online or go instore and buy it. Valid until 8/4/13.

Pretty good deal considering USB 3.0 enclosures are spendy.

Plenty, hard drives have a finite life span. I would say you have to replace a hard drive after 5-8 years on average.
hmmm...5-8 years on average..??

I have never had an external one fail...though to be honest I have kept upgrading every 3-4 years and gave the old one away

That is why I really question the value of x amount of years on electronics

they give u free ship label thro concierge services, but after 90 days you can't just take it to the warehouse for a refund. still need to go thro manufacture warranty instead

or so i thought?
You thought correctly. After 90 days you have to go through the manufacturer's warranty service. No retailer is going to take a return after 90 days. In fact, most limit you to 30 days or less for any returns. Costco may have a different policy, but I'd be extremely surprised. Contact Seagate for an RMA and make arrangements to return the defective drive. You can go to their website to check the warranty status by entering the model number and serial number of the drive. Seagate may allow you to cross ship the drive so you can get the replacement right away, but you have to provide a credit card as a security deposit. The card won't get charged unless the return drive isn't received within a specified period.

I've had drives die on me from just about every manufacturer currently in business and many that are no longer making them. 5-8 years is extremely optimistic and definitely not the normal lifespan. 1-2 year warranties are the norm these days where they used to be as long as 5 years. Drive technology changes so rapidly now that trying to replace a drive that you bought 5 years ago is next to impossible in many cases. For the same price you paid for the original drive you can probably get a new drive with 2-4 times the capacity.

as do many Visas and Mcards

while nice to have I wonder how many people ever have a hard drive fail after the warranty is up?
Note that Costco does not accept Visa/MC; only Amex.

hence the reason for my post earlier in this thread
5 years from now...you could probably get a device equal or better than this one for half the price

Thats even assuming the technology hasn't changed and you would even have a desire to use this type of drive at the time

If you buy online, Costco accepts Visa. I bought a computer online last year and was surprised that Visa was an option as I was figuring on having to use my Amex. In the warehouse, it's only Amex (and maybe Discover).

Well, then be extremely surprised as you are incorrect. Costco will take the return under its Customer Satisfaction Policy at ANY time as long as you have your receipt.

Three weeks ago, I replaced a 3 TB HD that had failed after 18 months. I had my receipt, got a new HD and even made almost $30 as the price had changed. I will be replacing another later today that failed after 25 months, but I have my receipt and expect no problems.

Costco is da bomb when it comes to electronics!

I've returned two WD MyBooks to Costco that had failed after two years (different times). In addition to simply returning them, I had taken them apart and drilled some holes in them to protect my data from being recovered. So anyone that has never used Costco's return policy should simply not comment on something they don't understand.

I have three of these Seagate internal drives in my server and they work well. I saw this deal in the warehouse over the weekend, but decided I wouldn't buy any more drives until I'm running low on storage again. More than likely they will be below $100 everywhere at that time or the 4TB will be the new standard in my server.
