As inconvenient as it was, I found jury service to be rather interesting and eye-opening. You always hear and see television "examples" (ha) of court cases, but to see one in person, to me was intriguing. You spent two days in a pool at minimum (I think...), and I was chosen to be part of a group of 50 or so people going into one courtroom about mid-morning. Enough people were excused and I ended up as a part of the 13 (12+alternate to be picked later). Actually went through the next 3 or 4 days, if I remember correctly...and then naturally, I was the one randomly chosen as the alternate, so I didn't get to discuss the case with my fellow jurors.
And of course, here I was getting only $10/day...my wife, had she had to serve here recently (she called and they said she didn't need to come in), would've got $40/day plus housing+food costs since we live decently far away ($200ish/day). All-in-all, very inconvenient in most cases, but definitely an interesting experience!
I live in Puerto Rico although I do not qualify for Jury Duty under the old law, and under the new one they have yet to remember about me, the law here states
ArtÃ_culo 7 - Derechos de la persona citada a servir como jurado
(e) Recibir de su patrono el pago de su salario mientras se encuentre en servicio activo de jurado por el tiempo y conforme a las normas que se aprueben por esta Ley.
Translation is mine so please excuse any errors
Article 7 - Rights pertaining to a person chosen to serve as jury
(e) Receive from his employer the payment of his salary while he is serving as a juror for the time and according to the rules approved i this law.
One of the rules is that the trail may not last longer than 3 months.
Jurors also get a meal payment also payment for transportation.
the law also states that you cannot be asked to be on a jury more than once every 5 year.
