Which deal are you referring to? I'm trying to help a friend get a time warner cable modem. Thanks in advance.

Looks like you can use either 5100 or 5100u for Time Warner. My leased one is sb5100 and I just ordered this.

fa q TWC! the worst.
Here is a great article on how to avoid Time Warner cable modem fees.

This is an excellent find and very timely with the newly raised lease fees.
HOWEVER: it is only approved for the lower speed subscriptions to TWC so check the link provided by joe_blow_xbox above to be sure this will work for you (Lite, Basic and Standard Service Plans).

If you have Turbo, Extreme or Ultimate Service Plans you will need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem

For those who don't know the difference, the 5101u is the less expensive version of the 5101 without the "standby" button on top of the modem. An almost useless button in my opinion since it doesn't cut off power...just cuts the Internet feed.

Need or want? I'm still on DOCSIS 2.0 with Turbo. Is it that I won't be able to switch to another DOCSIS 2.0 modem then?

It's my understanding that DOCSIS 3.0 will eventually be the mandatory standard, but that is not yet the case. So you may need to update your equipment more quicly if you choose to get a DOCSIS 2.0 modem now.

Per the TWC site [timewarnercable.com], it seems like all the higher speed approved modems are DOCSIS 3.0. What modem are you using? You might not be getting the best speed available to you if you're using an older modem and paying for higher speeds...

I'd get a DOCSIS 3.0 modem if you can, the bonded channels and higher speeds make it well worth it.

Even if the company doesn't fully use all the bonded channels of a modem, they may eventually.

Good deal for the price, sure, but a newer DOCSIS 3.0 modem saves you the time and hassle of having your internet down for a few days when they suddenly "upgrade" the system and no longer support DOCSIS 2.0 modems.

This is inaccurate, sarcasmogratis.

Docsis 2.0 modems support up to and including Turbo speeds from Time Warner. It's only Extreme and Ultimate that require Docsis 3.0.

Time Warner is never going to suddenly cut Docsis 2.0 support. They'd be forced to replace hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of their own Docsis 2.0 equipment. It'd be a gradual change with plenty of warning.

Does it work for Comcast, since they were Time Warner.

For $33.49 you can consider getting a DOCIS 3.0 modem also and never have to worry about a cable modem again and will future proof faster internet speeds.
