ATT Unlocked iPhone 4S - can only get 2G (EDGE) on Walmart Family Mobile (T-Mobile MVNO) - Help Needed

I guess this question must have been asked numerous times on other forums, seeking help from SD community if anyone has found any workaround.

The phone was officially unlocked from ATT.

I am in Richmond VA (23233) and there are only some spots where I can get 3G and rarely 4G. Always get EDGE at my work location.

I am aware of the fact that Tmobile is re-farming their network to support 1900mhz phones, but is there any other workaround that can be applied to get at least 3G speeds in my area where I always get EDGE?

I am open to trying jailbreak, if required. Wink

Thanks

if the 3G/4G signal isn't available in your area, you can't make it work.
You can't get what doesn't exist.
You'll need to wait for TMobile to put up more towers to support the speed.

There's no way to piggyback onto say AT&T's 3G band unless tmobile/AT&T sign some sort of agreement.

At least 3G is available in my area, but it's just my phone that's not supporting it.

My friend who has iPhone supplied by Tmobile, is receiving 3G/4G speeds, I guess because his phone supports 1900mhz band.

Is there anything that can be done to make my phone "fit into" Tmobile network?

Your friend got an iPhone directly from T-Mobile? As in, he got a T-Mobile-branded iPhone?
I'm assuming he got an iPhone 5.

If so, that's because official T-Mobile iPhones 5 have the bands for T-Mobile's 3G/4G HSPA+
The band is AWS 1700/2100MHz, and you HAVE to have both (you can't just have 1 and have it work in "half').
Both are required to make T-Mobile's 3G/4G HSPA+ work.

You know about the T-Mobile refarm - that's good! They're working on changing their 1700/2100MHz HSPA+ and slowly converting existing customers to 1900MHz HSPA+, because they want to use the 1700/2100MHz spectrum for LTE.

But you have an AT&T-branded iPhone. AT&T iPhones have the following bands (for certain domestic and international carriers): 850MHz, 900MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz
AT&T use the 850MHz band and/or 1900MHz band - the phone only needs 1 or the other to have voice/data work.
However T-Mobile's refarming their network to include 1900MHz.
Since the AT&T iPhone doesn't have both 1700/2100MHz, you'd never be able to get 3G/4G HSPA+ on T-Mobile's old AWS 1700/2100MHz band.

Finally, T-Mobile's official iPhone 5 has 5 bands: 850MHz, 900MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz, 2100MHz
So you can see here, that T-Mobile's iPhone will work with T-Mobile's AWS 1700/2100MHz 3G/4G HSPA+ and if you had it unlocked, you can stick in your AT&T sim and use AT&T bands for 3G/4G as well.

None of T-Mobile's iPhone 4 and 4S have the AWS 1700/2100MHz band, so you're out of luck there.

Thanks everyone!

Looks like, I have to be patient until Tmobile completes their refarming in my area. Frown
