From the Dropbox team:
"You can now 1GB of additional space by linking your Dropbox account with Mailbox! To find out more, visit:

https://www.dropbox.com/getspace

All you need to do is download the Mailbox app on your iOS device and link your Dropbox account. Once you've done that, go to the link above and the bonus will appear in your account."

Instructions (requires an iOS device):

1. Install Mailbox [apple.com] app
2. Log into gmail account (doesn't seem to be a way to bypass this) via Mailbox app
3. Link your Dropbox account
4. Verify that 1GB was added by logging into your Dropbox account

You can unlink/delete the app and your space will remain (thanks seasnake4).

isn't that only for two years only though?
Yes. 50GB was free for 2 years then you have to pay to keep it.

After struggling with inadequate free Dropbox space, I switched over to Copy.com. They are very generous with 5GB per referral. Very easy to rack up free space and I think their sync client is just as good as Dropbox.

Thanks OP. Worked for me. I already had my Dropbox linked, so I unlinked and relinked and it worked.

You seem to be a bit sarcastic about it, but I am actually considering this. I've only been in an Apple store once in my life. Is this an easy - and more importantly, safe - thing to do?

Thanks,
Tofu Vic
I've been to the Apple store numerous times and I always see people's accounts logged in. If you really wanted to do it, you have to setup and destroy or log out EVERYthing before you leave. Either that, or change your email password when you get home

I have always had issues with dropbox (windows 7 64 bit desktop machine). When syncing, if there is ever any internet traffic (check email, surf net), the computer and network traffic freezes for exactly 3 minutes. Has anyone seen this?
