Not bad. I have the NSA320, which is pretty much identical, except the CPU is slower (1.2 vs 1.8GHz) and it doesn't have USB3. I modded it to run debian, which it does quite well, but the stock firmware is actually quite capable on its own, and if I were doing it over again, I'd seriously consider sticking with it.

I have two 1 tb drives I'm going to throw in to create a networked attached media server.
This is all new to me, so I hope it's easy to get set up.

Thanks OP, in for 1.

This is a great deal, I paid about $140 off newegg a while back. I have two 3-tb drives in it, runs great. I use it mainly for streaming to the PS3, wifi radios, and backups. Does just about anything we need it to.

I've been waiting for a deal on this exact NAS. The cheapest I've seen so far was $140. I have two 3 TB drives waiting to be installed.

you can use any NAS for uploading of your foscam videos and photos within your local network. moreover you can use a cloud storage as well.

How does this compare to HP MediaSmart EX470 with WHS? I have a brand new EX470 and was wondering if I should sell it and get something with USB 3.0 and better processor.

EDIT: Found some good info here comparing EX470 to Synology -> http://www.wegotserved.com/2012/0...-server/4/

Can anyone compare the firmware to Synology? Price is nice but "ZyXEL" seems like a cheesy off brand

While I can't comment on the comparison to Synology, ZyXel is actually an established name brand. Mostly making consumer networking equipments, I'd say they're on par with D-Link and Netgear, etc.

Do you have to have a computer on all the time for recording from ip cameras?
