Planet Fitness is running their "One year. One payment. Zero hassle" promotion.

Not sure how wide spread this promotion is - however I did check five different locations in Western New York, Northern Pennsylvania and NE Ohio. Normal price at my nearest location is $170($10/month + $50 membership fee).

Go here to find your local club
https://www.planetfitness.com/EasyJoin.aspx

After finding your preferred club, you will see the prices down the right hand side:
- 1st: the Black (premier) price
- 2nd: the regular membership price
- 3rd: this promotional offer (if available at your location)
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

I took the tour at two different Planet Fitness gyms to see if I wanted to join. At both the big purple alarm went off. I couldn't believe it. Didn't join.

I've never joined a gym before. Newbie Question: does someone show you around and explain how to use the equipment, etc when you join?
Yes. I've belonged to all kinds of gyms over the years and I've found the employees generally are glad to help you if you have questions about machines. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish the personal trainers that really don't work for the gym, but they will help you too, if they are available. Only they may try to sell you their services. It's ok if you politely decline.

I guess it all depends on the people who work in the gym.
Some employees get annoyed when asked.

I signed up my brother and he went yesterday. They didn't offer to show him around the gym or anything. Just told him he could start working out today. After the credit card was charged online, it said to go to PF to get a key card and a free shirt, neither was given to him.

You couldn't pay me to go to Planet Fitness. What facility serious about health actually serves its clients pizza...? Go to the YMCA.

Check to make sure a yearly equipment maintenance fee isn't charged sometime during the year. I think it was $29.99 charged in either April or October, depending on the $9.99/mo. one gym only or this $99/year or the black card options. Orlando locations ( same franchisee) wanted a checking account to attach to my account, and would not take cash prepaid upfront or a credit card plan. I tore up the contract and walked out.

I decided to buy a black card membership through Aetna's health insurance discount. It came to around $208 out the door for a year, no signup or equipment maintenance fees, and I could pay by credit card. Planet Fitness has no checking or credit car accounts on file.

Did he look around for a 'training session' schedule?

At my location, they have a schedule of sessions you can sign up for and it's not a real personal trainer thing. But it's basically them helping you make a workout routine for yourself, showing you how to properly use the equipment, and figuring out what settings (like how high the seats should be) are appropriate and safe for you so that you know how to use everything.

I thought they did that at all locations, but maybe not.

You can always skip pizza night and still get really cheap workout time. The pizza's not mandatory.

Like I told someone else, at my particular local Planet Fitness they have a 'personal training' schedule where they have sessions you can sign up for. These sessions aren't real personal training in the sense that someone helps you through all your workouts. You're basically encouraged to go to a kind of 'welcome to the gym' general session where they help you build a workout schedule, and then to sign up for more specific ones where you learn to use various types of equipment.

So you can come in for a session devoted to the 30-minute circuit, and they'll walk you around, show you exactly how to use each machine, figure out what height settings and weight settings are good for you, and make sure that you write it all down so that you know what to do.

YMMV at other locations, but my experience has been that they were very good about making sure opportunities were available to learn how to use stuff. (You had to sign up for sessions so that a person would only be helping 3-4 people at a time so that everyone got all the attention they needed).

Planet fitness sucks unless you are just there for running. If you really want someone to help you join the YMCA or The Rush bother better gyms for even newbies. Plus no insane rules.

That is what I really want to know. How to use the machines properly. I've done stuff at home but not on workout equipment.

I just joined for $99 at the Falls Church, VA location. Thing is, I was told, after a year, I wouldn't have the option to renew for $99/year, and I would have to start a regular membership. Are you guys getting this at other clubs? Thanks!

At ~$9 a month, no other gym in my area comes close. All of them have "initiation" fees, and the lowest monthly rate is about $30. I think I'll risk putting up with the Lunk Alarm and consider it a "SD Tax" for this deal, then bounce to a better gym after my year is up. Thx op

Just took a tour of the local PF and was shocked how nice it was. $9 a month? Easy decision. Thanks OP.
