Motorola SB6141--worth upgrading from the SB6121?

pulpfiction 27 18 August 25, 2013 at 04:00 PM
Have some Staples Rewards to get rid of, and was wondering if picking an SB6141 would be worth it. Already have an SB6121..which I would then sell.

Connection is via Comcast Blast (50/10). The SB6121 is great thus far, but from what I understand the 6141 is more 'future proof'. Thoughts?

Thank you.

While that's a good answer, I'll play devil's advocate here. The SB6141 will certainly give you rock steady connection speeds, but your real world experience won't change one single bit. Surfing will not feel faster, downloads will not be noticably improved, but the benchmarks might make you feel better.

There's still a decent market for the 6121, so you probably won't be out of pocket too much if you do the swap. Just ask yourself if the warm & fuzzies from the improved benchmarks will justify that cost for you - if so, go for it,

Will the 6121 be obsolete in 3 years and the 6141 not? I want to get the 6121 with the free router from newegg today, but worried the 6141 is much better technology that will last longer.

No, it won't be obsolete. You'll need to have a very high speed connection to see the difference between the 121 and 141. Based on other SurfBoard modems that have been out there for a long time, the 121 will do just fine for the next 10 years.

yeah, won't be obsolete unless you happen to get an internet connection that's more than 150mbit/s (the 6121 tops out @ 150mbit/s, whereas the 6141 goes up to 300mbit/s).

i think i'll still be on 10-20mbit for a long time...
