I brought this notebook refurbished about 2 weeks ago for $270 with $30 off v.me. But this model has 4 gigs of memory, 500gb hard drive and 90 day warranty. The condition of the notebook is actually pretty good. Gaming performance is definitely good and you can play most games at 1366x768 at low-medium settings. Only bad thing is that you will probably have to upgrade the memory as this laptop supports dual channel but you will need 2 matching memory. Also, the bios seems to limit the amount of video memory to 512mb.
Gateway DX4870 PC with i3-2130 cpu for $300 at newegg
Antec 620w power supply for $30AR
8gb Patriot Memory (4gb x2) from Microcenter for $20AR
2tb Seagate Hard drive from Tigerdirect for $45AR
Refurb Nvidia 460gt 1gb for $50 from Tigerdirect
Way better than Intel HD3000 and better than HD4000 graphics. For games that rely on the GPU more than the CPU, this system should work pretty well. That said, the side of the notebook with the vents gets pretty hot during gaming sessions while the rest of the notebook stays relatively cool.
Win 8 is the biggest complaint I have.... yeah yeah there's Start 8 and Classic Shell and other "helper" programs but it's not Win 7. If you don't care, go for it.
I felt the same way...couldn't stand Win8. But just set up a Win8 system for someone and with Classic Shell, I felt right at home. And apparently, the underlying kernel is supposed to be more efficient than Windows 7. No Aero anymore though.
