I need some advice on getting 8 windows and a sliding glass door replaced on our 20 year old house. I am a 1st time home buyer and am new to this, so be gentle.

I have had a bunch of different quotes from Lowes, Pella and Window World and am getting one more for Norandex windows.

Lowes and Pella both offer about same product (thermastar and encompass)
- Pella installed is about $900 more total but offer a warranty labor of 10 years and have their own certified installers install them. The installation cost on the sliding glass door seems CRAZY expensive.
- Lowes is a local contractor and only offers a 2 year labor warranty and seems like it is much more of a hassle if an issue does arise.
- Window World is OUT, I didn't like/trust the guy and felt like he was trying to screw me from the beginning.

I guess I am just trying to get some reviews from actual customers, the reviews I have found online have mostly been negative and I am not finding much useful information. I am looking to get a good deal but also want the installation done right, which concerns me with the Lowes bid.

Any advice you guys have would be great.

Thanks in advance

Something like window replacement is HIGHLY regional, so you're better off asking around from friends & neighbors who might have experience with local companies. As a general rule, Pella will be on the high end of cost and quality, but that's about all the advice I could give you.

Kinda what the other guy said. I went to Lowes and Home Depot and got mine priced out. I then went to another local and much smaller hardware/home goods store and they came in cheaper and there was a deal for a $300 or $400 gift card as well. I went with them. I ran in to the guy at Home Depot and he asked when I was ready to order and I told him I already had and he then told me I should have brought him the price and he would have beat it. From the sound of it they have some negotiating in the price.

You really should figure out what type of window you want and then you can look at who stocks it and the prices. I put in some windows and a french door and I saw prices ranging from $600 for the stock french door to easily $5k. I think I spent $3k on my particular one but it offered everything the $5k did. It is a Jeld-Wen and I couldn't be happier with it. The range on windows and doors can be ridiculous! You can also order them on-line but I was a little wary of that incase something went wrong.

Lastly, a decent chunk of mine was paid for by Uncle Sam. I don't think it's as good as it used to be but you may be able to get some $ back as a tax credit.

There are also just local contractors who will get the windows and do the install for you. Again, prices vary a lot. I'm not gonna lie. I don't exactly envy you!

We are starting to figure that out. Lowes was $400 in labor to install the patio door and Pella is $800. Renewal by Anderson was over $10k for windows and installation.... The local contractor I talked to LOVES the Simonton.

Part of the problem is also that there are a lot of regional window/door manufacturers.

There are the national brands as well but there may be some quality regional brands at a discount price but I've never heard of them and I imagine others haven't so it's hard to get advice.

Good luck!

Thank you @LivninSC!!!

I am amazed at how many "good" brands get awful reviews by homeowners and contractors.

I agree with you, it's pretty confusing when it comes to reviews, one remains in a dilemma like what to believe and whom to believe. I comply with you because I have undergone these circumstance when I had to get replaced my old pane windows.

I gave a lot of time in researching over the internet regarding the quotation of different companies and contractors. Therefore, I gave the responsibility to value windows and doors [thv.com] who had a good reputation in the market because of their service. Moreover, they offered me an affordable range of energy efficient windows which made my home decor great.

Pella is expensive but it is worth some money. I would recommend andersonwindows or wincorewindows as they are good.

Thanks for your response. I just had all of our windows replaced with prism by simonton. A builder who I know and trust recommended them highly and took me to his house and his sons house that he installed them in. So far they have been awesome!
