Warranty: Message #1226 earlier from slimstrike:

Go here and login or create a Microsoft account then you can register the S/N. My 64GB is good until Oct. 2014 and also had the option to buy the 2 year Extended Service Plan with Accidental Damage Protection for $99.

Current status as of 10:24PM EST:

32GB Surface RT with touchcover: OUT OF STOCK
64GB Surface RT without touchcover: OUT OF STOCK

If the tablet you want is out of stock, keep resfreshing this page. [ebay.com] (Sellers keeps removing and re-adding the items)

32GB Microsoft Surface RT with Touch Keyboard Cover Refurb $199:

64GB Microsoft Surface RT (Without keyboard) Refurb $199:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64GB-Micr...5920884%26

Note: This is a manufacturer-refurbished item.
It carries the same warranty as new Surface RT's purchased at retail, and has been tested/restored by Microsoft to a working condition equal to new products. It has a 1 year warranty, and 30 day return period.

Although the Touch-covers (mylar one-piece) and Type-covers (actual moving keys) say they're on sale for $60-75'ish ... they're actually not a good price, particularly if they're only "seller refurbished", since this means the cover has only been inspected by the seller, whereas these Surface RT tablets are "manufacturer refurbished", meaning Microsoft has deemed the unit to be equivalent to a new unit in funcitonality. Touch covers now have a MSRP of $79 [zdnet.com], and Type covers should be about $99, so saving only 20% to get a used one (albeit in good condition) isn't a SlickDeal(tm). You can find the remaining stock of covers from the reseller here ... http://www.ebay.com/sme/manufactu...1185920884

Accessories:
eBay is also running double eBay bucks from 11am PST to 3PM PDT. (2pm EDT to 6pm EDT) ... better hurry!

The seller for these Surface units is listed as Manufacturer Certified [ebay.com], which is a subdivision of Secondipity [ebay.com], the latter which has a feedback rating of 16,726 and 99.2% positive feedback.

PayPal says the Seller is Liquidity Services Inc.

Important notes:
  • This is the Surface RT (running Windows RT, like Win8), not the Surface Pro (which runs Windows 8). It cannot run regular Windows desktop programs. It can only run apps compiled for Windows RT, and those apps are only available from the Windows Store.
  • On the plus side, Windows RT includes a version of Office Home-Student, including RT versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. A couple of difference between Office RT & normal Office is that they can't include user-programmed content like macros/addins, nor does it do background sync to SkyDrive. See this page [microsoft.com] for more info on Office RT differences.
  • The bootloader is locked, so currently there is no prospect for being able to put Android or any other OS on this tablet.
  • Because the OS is locked down, the only web browser available is Internet Explorer compiled for Windows RT.
  • The Windows RT app store is limited in selection compared to other, more mature tablet OS's like iOS and Android. If you need to use a certain app, check first if it exists specifically for Windows RT via Windows Store Search [microsoft.com]. Search results that indicate support for ARM processors are available on Windows RT.
  • Windows RT 8.1 update is coming on October 18th, which will include Outlook, as well as a simple Start menu.
  • Windows RT takes up about 15GB of storage. Link. [gizmodo.com]

First, you're combining the Windows 8 Marketplace and the Windows RT Marketplace into one figure (and not quoting a source) despite the fact that Windows 8 apps are not in any way compatible with Windows RT. That's incredibly misleading. Most that growth is surely Windows 8 apps.

Second, if you have 10 apps, and then you have 20, you have 100% growth. That doesn't change the fact that you only have 20 apps. People want to know what apps are available now for RT. If you can provide that info, it would actually be useful. Misleading statements about app marketplace growth are not.
Agreed. I think it makes sense for Microsoft to merge RT and Phone OS [thevarguy.com], but that probably won't happen until Ballmer is gone. The rumors keep popping up [mynokiablog.com] though.

The question is, if Microsoft does end up merging RT & Phone, will the new OS be backported to these first gen RT tablets? Based on Microsoft's history with their phones, personally I wouldn't count on it. So for those of you buying these tablets, you have to be content with the way they are sold now (and perhaps with the upcoming 8.1 update).

It's funny, these OS based product threads (windows/apple/android) are the only ones where people who don't pike it and have no intentions of buying it, will hang around and continually post again and again why they don't like it and bash and bash. Amazing how people will waste their free time, sitting on a forum for something they don't want just to post the same uninteresting crap over and over again. The fact you feel that strongly about it to keep up the posting is just sad.

1. What the better deal? The 64GB or 32GB w/touch cover? I ordered the 64GB when the 32 went out of stock, but now its come back and I really like the free touch cover... I don't know if I can switch it up.

2. The 64GB version says "Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview" and the 32GB version says "Office Home and Student 2013 RT." Is there a difference between the two versions?

1. the extra size is good but I guess it depends on whether you are planning on purchasing a keyboard. The keyboard by itself else where seems really expensive. Personally I could look beyond the additional space on the 64gb because I could easily increase storage with and Sd card, and I would rather have a keyboard for typing. I'm mainly going to be using this to type papers, FB, and surf the web.

2. I thought they were the same.

The office versions are the same. They were both described as preview since these came out before office 2013 was released. Once you update it they will both be the same.

Memory leaks are a byproduct of poor memory management by applications, not the operating system. Android does have the ability to free up RAM automatically when an application is closed but doesn't release the memory. You're wrong.

A system partition that runs out of space is due to someone not providing enough space in the first place. Every operating system in existence must deal with this same problem, yet you've convinced yourself that this is an Android problem. You're wrong.

My guess is that you bought a cheap tablet with limited space, installed a ton of free and poorly supported applications on it, and had some issues. Then instead of actually learning anything about what may be causing the problems, you decided to barf out something about it being an Android problem.

Incidentally, if you're running out of space, you can mount additional space into the same /system partition. It's very easy to do, but that would require you to actually learn a little about Android, which you seem inclined not to do.
A good OS has checks on runaway processes and, at minimum, provides a straightforward way for the user to ID and kill them. Android doesn't have this. Some 3rd party apps provide some of this ability, but because of the way Android works, using them typically wrecks havoc with longterm performance. Android also has issues with filling cache and Davlnk cache, and doesn't do this type of maintenance automatically or offer a straightforward way to clean them without booting into recovery.

I have Android tablets from Asus, HP (moded) and Samsung and they all suffer the same issues. They are not, as you suggest, cheap crap.

My phone (Motorola) is also Android, and also has the same problems. As did my previous (HTC) Android phone.

So, Ibought one... don't know why. Apparently I had $200 just sitting around waiting to spend on something I am sure I'll never use. But, hey - I have an Android phone, and Ipad and now a Surface Tablet. Why not?

SD Effect! And imo, 32gb is better. You can add an SD card for extra storage and this seller has the keyboard listed at $70, refurbished. Now which sounds better? Wink

Will I be able to update to Windows 8.1 on the RT? Or will it only be able to update on the RT 2?

They all say that. Doesn't matter.
