Warranty: Message #1226 earlier from slimstrike:

Go here and login or create a Microsoft account then you can register the S/N. My 64GB is good until Oct. 2014 and also had the option to buy the 2 year Extended Service Plan with Accidental Damage Protection for $99.

===========================================================

Current status as of 10:24PM EST:

32GB Surface RT with touchcover: OUT OF STOCK
64GB Surface RT without touchcover: OUT OF STOCK

If the tablet you want is out of stock, keep resfreshing this page. [ebay.com] (Sellers keeps removing and re-adding the items)

32GB Microsoft Surface RT with Touch Keyboard Cover Refurb $199:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/32GB-Micr...2a30c60cb3

64GB Microsoft Surface RT (Without keyboard) Refurb $199:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64GB-Micr...5920884%26

Note: This is a manufacturer-refurbished item.
It carries the same warranty as new Surface RT's purchased at retail, and has been tested/restored by Microsoft to a working condition equal to new products. It has a 1 year warranty, and 30 day return period.

Although the Touch-covers (mylar one-piece) and Type-covers (actual moving keys) say they're on sale for $60-75'ish ... they're actually not a good price, particularly if they're only "seller refurbished", since this means the cover has only been inspected by the seller, whereas these Surface RT tablets are "manufacturer refurbished", meaning Microsoft has deemed the unit to be equivalent to a new unit in funcitonality. Touch covers now have a MSRP of $79 [zdnet.com], and Type covers should be about $99, so saving only 20% to get a used one (albeit in good condition) isn't a SlickDeal(tm). You can find the remaining stock of covers from the reseller here ... http://www.ebay.com/sme/manufactu...1185920884

Accessories:
eBay is also running double eBay bucks from 11am PST to 3PM PDT. (2pm EDT to 6pm EDT) ... better hurry!

The seller for these Surface units is listed as Manufacturer Certified [ebay.com], which is a subdivision of Secondipity [ebay.com], the latter which has a feedback rating of 16,726 and 99.2% positive feedback.

PayPal says the Seller is Liquidity Services Inc.

Windows RT Youtube Review

Important notes:
  • This is the Surface RT (running Windows RT, like Win8), not the Surface Pro (which runs Windows 8). It cannot run regular Windows desktop programs. It can only run apps compiled for Windows RT, and those apps are only available from the Windows Store.
  • On the plus side, Windows RT includes a version of Office Home-Student, including RT versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. A couple of difference between Office RT & normal Office is that they can't include user-programmed content like macros/addins, nor does it do background sync to SkyDrive. See this page [microsoft.com] for more info on Office RT differences.
  • The bootloader is locked, so currently there is no prospect for being able to put Android or any other OS on this tablet.
  • Because the OS is locked down, the only web browser available is Internet Explorer compiled for Windows RT.
  • The Windows RT app store is limited in selection compared to other, more mature tablet OS's like iOS and Android. If you need to use a certain app, check first if it exists specifically for Windows RT via Windows Store Search [microsoft.com]. Search results that indicate support for ARM processors are available on Windows RT.
  • Windows RT 8.1 update is coming on October 18th, which will include Outlook, as well as a simple Start menu.
  • Windows RT takes up about 15GB of storage. Link. [gizmodo.com]

Just to make sure did everyone's surface come wrapped in plastic in side the box?

yes and it was a semi rigid type of plastic with sticky glue in places to keep it on

what needs to be done if the Windows update are stuck (specially the one for Office Preview). I did the reboot and it freezes again on those updates.

Anyone else feel that their Surface is just a tad slower than it should be? I was hoping to make this my "couch laptop" for browsing the internet or punching out short emails but almost every task feels sluggish or unresponsive before kicking in. It's not unusably slow, but considering some people claim that this is a product that competes well with iPads, Nexus 7 or even actual laptops then I'm curious if they are just exaggerating or if I should start troubleshooting mine.

I ordered 2 bundles for my gf and I and an extra type keyboard from them. One of the bundle has already passed the shipping window and the tracking shows no information. Seller doesn't respond to multiple emails. For those of you hoping to return it, forget it, just throw it on CL and get even more money.

Now i have to deal with the CC company.

I absolute dread the IE interface. Hopefully 8.2 will fix some issues.

Have you ever used Chrome on Android? It is just horrible and wonky. Default Android browser is way better. I am thinking there are some technical issues both google and MS are facing while porting to touch environment. Still out of two, the IE touch interface is way better than chrome imo- still has some issues with random websites, overall I am fine with it. Win 8.1 has fix a lot of those issues.

I think your experience is normal. Microsoft used a slow chip, and worsened the experience with software that contains little to no optimization. It's one of the reasons RT sold so poorly and Microsoft had to take a $900M hit, but also why you were able to snap it up for $200.

Yes it can be sluggish no doubt. iOS / Android are faster, but doesn't have a desktop mode like the RT, so some trade offs.

I'm curious as to what Android devices you used Chrome on. My experience with Chrome on a Galaxy Note 2 smartphone and the new Nexus 7 tablet has been excellent. It's very easy to see why the Surface RT tablet failed. Although I do believe that it is a good deal at $200, you are really compromising in other areas for the bargain price. The upcoming 8.1 update may help some but it's not going to improve the sluggish Tegra 3 chip and the dated screen resolution. If anyone is on the fence about keeping/selling their Surface, I would advise to dump them while they still have some value (I traded mine into Gamestop) as the Surface 2 devices are just around the corner. I'm holding out hope that MS learned from the first round and will offer a more capable device with reasonable pricing for the next gen.

That was my exact thought when I read that comment. It seems like he's either never used Chrome or confused something else for it. Chrome is excellent on Android smartphones & tablets.

WTF are you talking? Chrome is known to be jumpy and slow on Android, if you are not a blind fanboy. Why else do they still have stock android browser? Google could have replace stock browser with Chrome if it is as great as you say it is Smilie Are you sure you are not confusing chrome to stock Android browser? I used it on my Droid / CM10 on touchpad - and it is HORRIBLE to say the least. Chrome on desktop is perfect but chrome on tablet/phone =/= chrome on desktop. no comparison. Metro IE has its many issues, nobody can deny it, but to say chrome on Android is perfect is a joke.

I can give you hundreds of discussions / reviews on Chrome issues on Android, but here is one from a few months ago from Droid forums ...

Chrome is known to be a bit buggy on android. Kind of ironic considering its Google. .. The best suggestion may be to try another browser.

I finally wound up disabling Chrome. It was unreliable, freezing up and sooooo slow. Drove me crazy. Disabled it and use the stock which I actually kind of like!

You fail to mention specifically which Droid phone you used Chrome on. Maybe you have an old POS phone? I've used Chrome on a Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Nexus 7 2012 & 2013, iPad 2, and PC and it runs and performs just fine. Every time I acquire a new Andoid device, Chrome is the first app I download if it isn't on there by default. Can't remember the last time I used the stock browser.
