Warranty: Message #1226 earlier from slimstrike:

Go here and login or create a Microsoft account then you can register the S/N. My 64GB is good until Oct. 2014 and also had the option to buy the 2 year Extended Service Plan with Accidental Damage Protection for $99.

Current status as of 10:24PM EST:

32GB Surface RT with touchcover: OUT OF STOCK
64GB Surface RT without touchcover: OUT OF STOCK

If the tablet you want is out of stock, keep resfreshing this page. [ebay.com] (Sellers keeps removing and re-adding the items)

32GB Microsoft Surface RT with Touch Keyboard Cover Refurb $199:

64GB Microsoft Surface RT (Without keyboard) Refurb $199:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64GB-Micr...5920884%26

Note: This is a manufacturer-refurbished item.
It carries the same warranty as new Surface RT's purchased at retail, and has been tested/restored by Microsoft to a working condition equal to new products. It has a 1 year warranty, and 30 day return period.

Although the Touch-covers (mylar one-piece) and Type-covers (actual moving keys) say they're on sale for $60-75'ish ... they're actually not a good price, particularly if they're only "seller refurbished", since this means the cover has only been inspected by the seller, whereas these Surface RT tablets are "manufacturer refurbished", meaning Microsoft has deemed the unit to be equivalent to a new unit in funcitonality. Touch covers now have a MSRP of $79 [zdnet.com], and Type covers should be about $99, so saving only 20% to get a used one (albeit in good condition) isn't a SlickDeal(tm). You can find the remaining stock of covers from the reseller here ... http://www.ebay.com/sme/manufactu...1185920884

Accessories:
eBay is also running double eBay bucks from 11am PST to 3PM PDT. (2pm EDT to 6pm EDT) ... better hurry!

The seller for these Surface units is listed as Manufacturer Certified [ebay.com], which is a subdivision of Secondipity [ebay.com], the latter which has a feedback rating of 16,726 and 99.2% positive feedback.

PayPal says the Seller is Liquidity Services Inc.

Important notes:
  • This is the Surface RT (running Windows RT, like Win8), not the Surface Pro (which runs Windows 8). It cannot run regular Windows desktop programs. It can only run apps compiled for Windows RT, and those apps are only available from the Windows Store.
  • On the plus side, Windows RT includes a version of Office Home-Student, including RT versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. A couple of difference between Office RT & normal Office is that they can't include user-programmed content like macros/addins, nor does it do background sync to SkyDrive. See this page [microsoft.com] for more info on Office RT differences.
  • The bootloader is locked, so currently there is no prospect for being able to put Android or any other OS on this tablet.
  • Because the OS is locked down, the only web browser available is Internet Explorer compiled for Windows RT.
  • The Windows RT app store is limited in selection compared to other, more mature tablet OS's like iOS and Android. If you need to use a certain app, check first if it exists specifically for Windows RT via Windows Store Search [microsoft.com]. Search results that indicate support for ARM processors are available on Windows RT.
  • Windows RT 8.1 update is coming on October 18th, which will include Outlook, as well as a simple Start menu.
  • Windows RT takes up about 15GB of storage. Link. [gizmodo.com]

I'd say around 30$. He most likely didn't get charged FVF or if he did it was heavily discounted.

I read through the whole thread to see if "how much space is actually available after OS?" was asked and answered.

Is what you are saying true for the RT? Or are you basing the 15gb avail on your experience with W8pro?

So on this Surface RT how much of the 32gb is available? Or put another way, how much space does the OS take of the 32gb?
after the operating system, out of the 32gb of space you start off with, you'll actually only have 15gb of available free space to play with. i have a 64gb one and only had around 40gb of free space.

I ordered in the 200 unit sales area and I have a ups ground tracking number already, super fast service I would say, in fact just after I placed order I also ordered that so called $50.00 case for $9.99 from same seller and received tracking number for it before I did the RT, great seller so far.

Hardware would be a great deal but boot loader is locked sadly and if it is limited to windows RT apps, not worth it for me. Be a lot of fun if you could unlock boot loader.

Certainly, nobody wants a bunch of products back, but the fact of the matter is that everyone gets them, and the more they make and sell, the more they'll get back. Even Apple gets tons of defective iDevices back, which is why they virtually always have cheaper refurbs in stock on their website.

This is not *ideal* business, but it's still *good* business. Bad business would be letting those devices languish unsold in a warehouse or dump them in a landfill somewhere. Putting them in customer hands on the cheap is extremely good business for many reasons, not the least of which is simply that more users=more potential future customers, as many of those people will become invested in the ecosystem.

You're not looking at this in a long term way, and that's your error. Microsoft knows how to play the long game, and historically speaking, they play it better than just about anyone.

I think this is much like the BB Playbook. Or the HP TouchPad. A big disaster. No matter how you spin it, MS has taken an enourmous hit on this and it's a great deal for consumers.

so buy a Windows 8 laptop and install Windows 7?

I still don't understand why Windows 8 is a train wreck.

I only see Metro once a day when I boot up. What's the big deal? I don't know why people are so obsessed with the Start menu.
I use Start8 and never see a metro app. I will run one in a window every now and then, but that's about it. I don't get the trainwreck comment either. Win8 can act just like win7 but take advantage of the better underlying OS. If you buy into RT, you're buying into a mobile like OS. Don't get all the animosity. Just buy to your needs and got over it people.

That price tells you everything you need to know about what a total trainwreck Windows RT is, and what a colossal embarrassment the Surface has been to Microsoft.
The price is where it should have been released to make an impact in the market. Surface RT really is a great tablet but they were delusional expecting any real traction up against established competition at the initial price point.
