Warranty: Message #1226 earlier from slimstrike:

Go here and login or create a Microsoft account then you can register the S/N. My 64GB is good until Oct. 2014 and also had the option to buy the 2 year Extended Service Plan with Accidental Damage Protection for $99.

===========================================================

Current status as of 10:24PM EST:

32GB Surface RT with touchcover: OUT OF STOCK
64GB Surface RT without touchcover: OUT OF STOCK

If the tablet you want is out of stock, keep resfreshing this page. [ebay.com] (Sellers keeps removing and re-adding the items)

32GB Microsoft Surface RT with Touch Keyboard Cover Refurb $199:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/32GB-Micr...2a30c60cb3

64GB Microsoft Surface RT (Without keyboard) Refurb $199:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/64GB-Micr...5920884%26

Note: This is a manufacturer-refurbished item.
It carries the same warranty as new Surface RT's purchased at retail, and has been tested/restored by Microsoft to a working condition equal to new products. It has a 1 year warranty, and 30 day return period.

Although the Touch-covers (mylar one-piece) and Type-covers (actual moving keys) say they're on sale for $60-75'ish ... they're actually not a good price, particularly if they're only "seller refurbished", since this means the cover has only been inspected by the seller, whereas these Surface RT tablets are "manufacturer refurbished", meaning Microsoft has deemed the unit to be equivalent to a new unit in funcitonality. Touch covers now have a MSRP of $79 [zdnet.com], and Type covers should be about $99, so saving only 20% to get a used one (albeit in good condition) isn't a SlickDeal(tm). You can find the remaining stock of covers from the reseller here ... http://www.ebay.com/sme/manufactu...1185920884

Accessories:
eBay is also running double eBay bucks from 11am PST to 3PM PDT. (2pm EDT to 6pm EDT) ... better hurry!

The seller for these Surface units is listed as Manufacturer Certified [ebay.com], which is a subdivision of Secondipity [ebay.com], the latter which has a feedback rating of 16,726 and 99.2% positive feedback.

PayPal says the Seller is Liquidity Services Inc.

Important notes:
  • This is the Surface RT (running Windows RT, like Win8), not the Surface Pro (which runs Windows 8). It cannot run regular Windows desktop programs. It can only run apps compiled for Windows RT, and those apps are only available from the Windows Store.
  • On the plus side, Windows RT includes a version of Office Home-Student, including RT versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. A couple of difference between Office RT & normal Office is that they can't include user-programmed content like macros/addins, nor does it do background sync to SkyDrive. See this page [microsoft.com] for more info on Office RT differences.
  • The bootloader is locked, so currently there is no prospect for being able to put Android or any other OS on this tablet.
  • Because the OS is locked down, the only web browser available is Internet Explorer compiled for Windows RT.
  • The Windows RT app store is limited in selection compared to other, more mature tablet OS's like iOS and Android. If you need to use a certain app, check first if it exists specifically for Windows RT via Windows Store Search [microsoft.com]. Search results that indicate support for ARM processors are available on Windows RT.
  • Windows RT 8.1 update is coming on October 18th, which will include Outlook, as well as a simple Start menu.
  • Windows RT takes up about 15GB of storage. Link. [gizmodo.com]

BTW, Microsoft is dumping the non-selling RT models into schools [macdailynews.com], so I wouldn't count on massive fire sales in the future. However, your kids may end up with a free one, so there is that. laugh out loud

This was painful to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1Bg3SMBJ4o

I sure hope the 8.1 update addresses some of these issues.
Wow, thats horrible
I would expect that from some some $50 budget tablet shake head

I think that is an excellent analogy. Performance is definitely more in line with netbooks, only it isn't as functional. Given that RT looks exactly like the full blown Windows 8 OS, I'm guessing Microsoft merely ported the x86 code to ARM and didn't bother to do a whole lot of optimization. If they had, I'd imagine the device would perform more like an iPad or decent Android tablet since the physical hardware components aren't that vastly different between them.

Microsoft says it's committed to RT, but I wonder what will happen when Bay Trail comes out and is more competitive with ARM chips in pricing [pcworld.com]. Will Microsoft still insist on sticking with the limited ARM platform on anything other than its phones? Only time will tell.
RT is simply incase x86 can't be competitive. The Apps are cross-platform. x86 has obvious benefits, however.

Just curious, but does something like DisneyJunior.com or web games work on a tablet like this? That alone would make it worth it because my kids can't access those Disney Junior games on the iPad.
You can watch all the Disney channels online or streaming.

You can play all the flash games. They are a little slow, however, but you can do anything you can do with a standard browser on a desktop/laptop.

Will I be able to update to Windows 8.1 on the RT? Or will it only be able to update on the RT 2?

Don't think that is going to happen. Even if it did, you would not be able to install anything like the real 8.1 anyway.
Actually if you go to the surface website you can get the Windows 8.1 Preview for RT now. 8.1 will be available as a free update for Windows 8 RT in October. Gonna install the preview as soon as I get mine. Got an email today reminding me that it would be shipping this Tuesday.

Thank you for posting this video! worship I was looking through all the negative comments on this thread and started to worry I had made a mistake.

I currently use an iPad 2 and never use any of the apps other than Netflix, mail and Chrome. Most of my tablet use revolves around web browsing and the ability to have the real Internet with flash and all is awesome. Big Grin

I already have 8.1 preview on mine, it's a lot better. I think this MS should have waited an year and released this as windows 8. I bought one more now for a gift. And at this price its a no brainer.

I bought one, but to your point, Windows app store would need to grow 10,000 times to try to keep up with Apple's app store.

A small worm growing at twice the rate will pale in comparison to an elephant just increasing 10%.

No, I'm pretty sure Microsoft does lose, a bunch of money and Steve Ballmer's job.

HP and Blackberry sure lost a ton of money on their failed tablets. Just because a bunch of consumers have playbooks or HP touchpads at firesale prices haven't earned them that much more positive word of mouth.
You clearly haven't been tracking the numbers. The Windows 8 marketplace of available apps, growing at its present rate, will surpass the iPad app market in approximately one year. If things slow down, which is unlikely, they could take up to 18 months.

Your attempt to conflate the blackberry playbook or hp touchpad with Windows 8 tablets is so beyond silly it doesn't even deserve a reply, but I'll be nice. Whereas blackberry and HP both gave up on their respective tablets following their poor receptions, the number, variety and quality of Windows 8 tablets has only increased, and will continue to do so. We're already entering a period in which device makers are shipping All in one desktops that are actually large tablets; this is a trend which will continue, not reverse. Moreover, as the next few years unfurl, you'll see a greater and greater number of Windows 8 laptops that are in fact hybrids. We've already seen a few, and the numbers are increasing, not decreasing.

As many others do, you're taking a very shallow, short-term look at how the market is evolving.

Oh please spare me.

If you double a penny at the end of a year you'd be the world's richest man by many factors.

Fact is the MS app store will grow, but it will absolutely not double on a constant basis as you seem to mis-imply.

I'm taking a shallow view of how the market is evolving?? ROFLMAO, that's why the MS Surface RT is now at $200??

Holy cow man...

I did see that video prior to me pulling the trigger to buy one.

But to temper expectations, here's one showing it's sluggish performance:

I'm really torn on if I'll keep it or ship it back.

Actually played with a display model at Staples and it's surprisingly alright. I've been using Win 8 for class and the annoyances are slowly disappearing this tablet will be great for note taking and making actual documents in class. I like the flat surface cover and will take a bit of practice to get used to, but my only gripe is the entire thing is very high grip and will probably wear down poorly over time.

Again, you're ignoring numbers to satisfy your fan boy wishes. 100,000 apps in 250 days, while it took iPad 453 days to reach the same milestone. Simple fact: Windows 8's marketplace is significantly outpacing the growth of the iPad marketplace. It WILL catch up, as will sales of Windows 8 tablets. While Windows tablets are growing, iPad actually shrank in sales by 25% last quarter.

As the growth of Windows 8 accelerates, so will the app marketplace. Why? Because developers are not stupid, and they are driven by the same market forces as everyone else. They will go to the largest marketplaces they can--all of them.
