I've been researching road bikes recently, and read that the older components are worse/heavier than the newer components, and a general rule is that the every couple of years each level of components is about equivalent to the level below it..

Anything specific to look for when perusing bikes on craigslist that you would recommend?

Get a size that fits - don't compromise on that.
Find out what size fits at a local bike shop. Buy something from them to say thanks.
Go with carbon (road at least) if you can; much nicer ride.
Frame before components, generally; components can be upgraded.
Rear der. over any other components.
DuraAce/Ultegra/105/Tiagra/Sora are the Shimano levels, best to worst.

Get a used 29er for 500. Much better for XC.

Free store pickup - and only store pickup. That means local, so I'd imagine there would always be tax, for those states that have it. Isn't that expected?
A more valid complaint about the thread title is that it doesn't specify what store/chain at which this "free store pickup" happens to be found... and the answer is that probably 80% of us aren't near enough to a Cannondale-authorized REI to make it worth the trip.

Fair point. But we CAN use this for PM.

I am looking for a bike for my 11y old son
I took him to REI last week and the guy told me he would do well with a 15" bike frame
any suggestions on a good deal on a bike like this?
my budget is about $400. I dont think any of the Cannondale models that are part of the deal have 15" frame size. I guess I could be flexible and go up to 17 or 18inches since he will grow into that size

Anything here is vastly more than a 11 year old could use, but if he really, really got into mtb, he'd _love_ any of the Cannondales; in spite of what's said, they're all very nice bikes, even the entry level ones.

PM with WHO? Most chain stores don't carry Cannondale (I'm a little surprised that REI carries them, but obviously I haven't been paying attention). And while I'm all about saving money, to use chain stores/SD deals to PM some local dealer just seems a little bit crappy. The service offered by the typical standalone bicycle shoppe just isn't offered by chains and personally would be happy with paying more at one. Just not a LOT more. Big Grin

Not so sure REI qualifies as a typical chain, being a co-op type operation. AND the level of Cannondale service at my closest REI is every bit as good as a LBS. Same mechanic who helped me five years ago when we first arrived in Austin is the mechanic who tuned my bike last week.

I'll agree with your PM question, since I'm not aware of any bike specialty stores who PM as a policy...maybe a one-off, but not regularly.

But they all negotiate, especially for 2013 models. I'm looking into a $3300 mtb at about $1100 off the MSRP; everyone deals.

I believe you can upgrade to a pretty decent air fork for around $175 with the Suntour upgrade program.

Yup! I did the upgrade from a semi crap fork to their Raidon (riding 29er) and it's great..holds the bumps very well, especially on baby heads with turns and keeps me grounded at 215lbs. Great deal on a very good fork that's easily equal or better than a Tora or Reba IMO.
The CDale listed for $600. is decent, but the drive train is lower end. That said, it's certainly upgradable to something higher end. If a CDale fan, great..if not, pass. If this was 29er, it would be a great deal. Since I went 29er 3 years ago, my IH Warrior Pro is gathering dust. Time to ride today (N. CA), and hope the smoke from the Yosemite fire is better today than yesterday.
