I have noticed a number of SlickDeals that recommend using the ShopDiscover link and a coupon code to compound savings. This is not a good idea. ShopDiscover is generally pretty strict about not allowing ANY coupon code to be used on any purchase. It will void the ShopDiscover cashback. This frequently goes unnoticed if you make a fair number of purchases on your DiscoverCard a month. Plus the ShopDiscover reward is usually not credited for several weeks, and by that time it is easy to forget to check on. FURTHERMORE, your Discover card must be used for the ENTIRE sales price when linking through ShopDiscover-- no partial use of gift certificates, credit slips-- nothing else. So if you chose to use your ShopDiscover for let's say 5% cashback, use no other code with it. This is especially important for large purchases. I have spoken to representatives from Discover about my cashback rewards and they have all confirmed this.

Other rebate sites may also say that a code that is not provided by them will void the rebate from their site. That may or may not be the case. Many of us have successfully used a code not provided by the rebate site (e.g. urlhasbeenblocked) and received both discounts. But this is hit or miss. They can always decide not to give you their rebate if they chose as you have been warned not to use an outside code. When making a large purchase, keep these things in mind as it may change how you wish to proceed with the sale.

Also, remember that Discover may say it gives 1% cashback on all purchases, but that is not true. Stores such as Walmart and buying clubs (e.g. BJ's) pay roughly .25%. AND, in order to receive the the full 1% certain tiers of spending must first be made.

Personally, I like Discover. I like their virtual numbers for online purchases. But it is necessary to understand the pitfalls so we can save the most on our purchases. I hope this helps someone who might have lost out on online discounts.

I've used the hell out of SD (ShopDiscover) and have never had a single issue with coupons messing up the works, or it taking "several weeks" for cashback to appear. I have had a few instances where the CB didn't appear, but those were during the holidays, and a quick call to their CS fixes it with no issues. I spent roughly $5k @ Lowe's this past winter, using a mover's coupon every time (10%) and had no issues with my Discover CB.

The standard rate for Discover is 0.25% for the first $3k then 1% flat after that. The 5% rotating categories and ShopDiscover stack on top of those flat CB's.

also how is it you claim that they do not offer 1% back @ Walmart when you can get 5% back at Walmart through ShopDiscover?

with discover it they changed it to 1% back on all purchases (rather than 0.25% on first 3k then 1% back on the rest).

You'll get crazy newbies who call 3x a day for 2 weeks straight, and post argumentative paranoia demanding the rebate is guaranteed, in writing, by certified mail, on their doorsteps, by tomorrow evening. Then all the other newbie sheep freak out, and THEY call 3x a day, for 2 weeks straight, and the paranoia explodes. And suddenly everyone's carting their paper back to the retailer demanding a refund.

Par1: Well yeah, why would you get cash back if you used a gift card.

Par2: Yes it states that coupons void cash back. This is done by the retailer, not discover card though. Many retailers dont void it.

Par3: Everyone on SD has converted their discovercard to the newer discover it card and everything is 1% minimum.

Par4: We are all glad you like virtual numbers.

I use it quite a bit and my biggest gripe used to be tracking to see if you got credit, but they finally fixed the statements to show it. I had one large purchase during last xmas season not post, but I called CS and it eventually did post (5% on $750 at Brooks Brothers). The 10% at Drugstore.com and Sears are particularly solid. During the fall last year, they even had 10% on Best Buy that I used with some $80 for $100 iTunes GCs.

And having a CC require you put the entire purchase on their card to get perks is nothing new. Good luck using AMEX purchase protection or a Visa Extended Warranty on something you bought with a gift card and balance on the card.

You're right - last holiday season I had a hell of a time trying to make sure I got the cashback I was due - but fortunately when I called to correct it, they were pretty easy about it and can look up what the cashback % was for each store by date (which I confirmed).

I'm still waiting for my 5% back on a refrigerator.

Bought through HD.com and have an order number for the online sale, but actual charge on the statement was from the local HD that arranged the delivery.

How can HD.com transfer a sale to a local store and get out of CB?

I've had no issues with HD.com/instore pickup with ShopDiscover; i've never had a delivery however.

Yes, every in store pickup has been fine with me too, it's the delivery order at issue.

I have an online order number and confirmation. It's been linked, switched, I don't know what to call it to a store order number and that store order number was the delivery invoice. And the local store completed the transaction at their register.

It'll work out.
