I've removed a few drives from external enclosures. When one died after a year or so, I fully expected WD to deny the warranty. All they asked for was the model/serial # and replaced it with a new bare drive, no questions asked.
Ha, ha! they assumed you removed it from the enclosure and gave you a bare drive!
I want to buy some and open them up... I've seen cheaper 3TB drives bare but they are usually Seagate which is on my BANNED list. So $100 for a 3TB WD Green drive isn't so bad. Tax + shipping sucks for me though.
Edit - oh hey, if you want USB 3 Amazon has it for $115, but free shipping and no tax for some... Tiger is tax+shipping so kind of works out the same.
